City on Fire is an upcoming criminal mystery series directed by Jesse Peretz, Liz Garbus, and Haifaa Al-Mansour based on a book by Garth Risk Hallberg. Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage wrote the screenplay for the eight-episode series in June 2021, and casting was completed in October 2021. They chose to call the series Brass Tactics before production began in April 2022 but quickly changed their minds to keep the novel's original title.

So, what’s the story about? Samantha is an NYU student who goes to see a friend's band perform at her favorite downtown bar but then gets out to meet someone and promises to come back soon. But Samantha is shot dead, leaving no witnesses, and the detectives, Parsa and Regan, arrive on the site to investigate the crime. Samantha's best friend, Charlie, is the primary suspect but is already on the hunt for the actual offender. A strange series of occurrences, including a citywide wildfire and an incident at a downtown music club, appear unrelated initially. Still, the investigators quickly discover a crucial link between Samantha's murder and those events. Simultaneously, Samantha's friends and Charlie realize she has left clues and wants them to find items revealing information about a broader plot.
