Surfshark has announced two new privacy-focused features, including Multi IP and an upgraded rotating IP option, aimed at increasing anonymity for users who want stronger protection from online tracking. The company says these tools, now available on macOS, are designed to make it harder for advertisers, data brokers, and other third parties to link user activity across the web.

Why Surfshark Is Rolling Out These Features

In today’s digital environment, people spend hours online for work, streaming, and communication - all of which can expose personal data. Surfshark says Multi IP and the improved rotating IP feature help reduce the amount of information advertisers and trackers can collect.

Rotating IP automatically changes a user’s IP address every five minutes within the selected region or country. Multi IP, however, assigns a different IP for each browsing session or website, preventing websites from linking visits to the same user. Together, these tools help limit profiling and reduce targeted advertising.

How Surfshark's New Rotating IP and Multi IP Work

Rotating IP: This feature cycles through different IP addresses at regular intervals. Even if a user stays connected to the same country or city, the IP changes automatically every five minutes. According to Surfshark, this makes it significantly harder for third parties to follow browsing patterns.

Multi IP: Multi IP assigns a unique IP address for every individual session or online resource accessed. Unlike a standard VPN connection, where all traffic leaves through one IP, this system spreads activity across multiple addresses. This setup removes the need to disconnect and reconnect to obtain different IPs manually. Users can also choose to switch IPs within a country, region, or globally.

Powered by Surfshark Nexus

Both features are made possible through Surfshark Nexus, the company’s global network framework built using Software-Defined Networking (SDN). Nexus links all Surfshark VPN servers into a single network, allowing users to switch locations without dropping their VPN connection.

Surfshark states that Nexus not only strengthens connection stability but also enables advanced privacy features like Multi IP and rotating IP.

Availability and Important Notes

The new Multi IP and upgraded rotating IP features are currently available for Surfshark macOS users. They can be enabled through the app’s Advanced settings.

Surfshark warns that enabling frequent or global IP rotation may cause certain apps or websites to function incorrectly, as some platforms flag rapidly changing IP addresses as unusual behavior. The company recommends these features primarily for users who require a higher level of privacy.
