JioMeet vs Zoom – How Do These Video-Conferencing Apps Compare? Which of These Should You Use?

By Novak Bozovic / July 4, 2020

JioMeet is the latest addition to the world of fasting-evolving video-conferencing apps. Even though it’s brand-new, this application is hugely capable (here’s how to get started with JioMeet). And the best thing is that it comes completely free of charge. Considering that its biggest competitors (such as Zoom, Google Meet, and Microsoft Teams) are heavily oriented toward premium-priced features, it would be interesting to compare them. More precisely, we’ve decided to do our JioMeet vs. Zoom comparison, and see if this newcomer can challenge the world’s most popular video-conferencing solution.

Considering that JioMeet doesn’t have anything premium-priced (everything is available for free), we’re going to do several rounds of comparisons. Then, we’ll summarize everything said below and answer the question of which app should you use, JioMeet or Zoom?

JioMeet vs Zoom (Free Plan)

It’s true that many of us are working remotely right now. And this also means that many of us need to keep our expenses under control. With this said, here’s a direct comparison between JioMeet and Zoom’s free plan.

JioMeet Zoom (Free)
Max Participants 100 100
Max Meeting Duration (1-on-1) 24 hours Unlimited
Max Meeting Duration (Group) 24 hours 40 minutes
Max Number of Meetings Unlimited Unlimited
Max Video Quality HD (720p) HD (720p)
Screen Sharing Supported Supported
Waiting Room Supported Supported

It’s clear that JioMeet comes first if we compare this app to Zoom’s free plan. The most significant benefit here is that JioMeet lets you run meetings for up to 24 hours, while Zoom limits you to 40 minutes only. Also, JioMeet doesn’t impose any limitations and comes with plenty of features on par with Zoom.

JioMeet vs Zoom (Paid Plan)

So, what if you’re willing to pay for one of Zoom’s premium plans? Well, for the majority of individuals, Zoom’s Pro plan should do the job. It comes priced at $14.99/month/host and extends the application’s features significantly.

JioMeet Zoom (Premium)
Max Participants 100 100
Max Meeting Duration (1-on-1) 24 hours Unlimited
Max Meeting Duration (Group) 24 hours 24 hours
Max Number of Meetings Unlimited Unlimited
Max Video Quality HD (720p) HD (720p)
Screen Sharing Supported Supported
Waiting Room Supported Supported

It’s also worth mentioning that Zoom’s Pro plan comes with extra features. For example, you get a set of comprehensive admin controls that let you fine-tune different aspects of each meeting. You also get detailed reports about your conferences and 1GB of storage for recording MP4 or M4A clips.

JioMeet vs Zoom – Security & Privacy

It will take some time until JioMeet is adequately tested – and this especially applies to its security. However, JioMeet encrypts your meetings via end-to-end encryption, and your meetings also password-protected. Still, we need additional information to truly get a sense of how robust this app’s security is and if it’s capable of safeguarding its users.

On the other hand, we have Zoom, a highly problematic application. Earlier this year, once the Coronavirus outbreak forced millions to use this application, plenty of troublesome information surfaced. Zoom has leaked passwords and meeting IDs, which were later sold on the dark Web. It took plenty of time until end-to-end encryption became available, which didn’t go without problems.

So, Which One Should You Use – Zoom or JioMeet?

It’s evident that JioMeet is trying to compete with Zoom directly. What we see here are sets of features that are very easy to compare – as JioMeet has adopted everything that Zoom already offers. However, there’s one big difference that influences the outcome of this JioMeet vs Zoom comparison.

JioMeet comes completely free of charge and offers more than what Zoom’s free plan has on offer. If you’re not willing to spend any money, our recommendation would be JioMeet. However, if you don’t mind spending around $15 per month on Zoom’s entry-level premium plan, we conclude that the investment is worth the price.
