Samsung Rumored To Be Working On a Budget Galaxy Home Speaker

By Nitish Singh / December 31, 2018

Samsung announced its Galaxy Home smart speaker in August which is yet to be released, but it seems like the company is already working on a newer device. The new speaker will be cheaper than the previously announced smart device according to reports, but we have no official word on specifications or pricing yet.

With a lower price point being one of the highlights of the upcoming speaker, it is likely that some of the features from the first-generation Bixby device will be missing. Bixby is Samsung’s attempt to take on the likes of Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple Siri, and Microsoft Cortana but in its current state, it lacks in functionality compared to the heavyweights.

Samsung has released its devkit for Bixby to third-party developers in a bid to increase the number of apps on offer. If the company hopes to catch up to Amazon Alexa in the smart home market and compete against Amazon’s Echo speakers a lot of improvements are needed. The upcoming Galaxy Home speaker is said to be focused on entertainment features instead of the smart assistant itself, and the product should be appealing to an audience looking for voice-assisted video and audio playback controls.

With smart speakers already very competitively priced with Amazon’s Echo devices and Google Home mini dropping around the $29 mark, Samsung will need to be aggressive with its pricing to break into the smart speaker market. The previously announced Galaxy Home device is likely to be a direct competitor to something like the Google Home Max which is a far more expensive offering. It is likely that the rumored Samsung Galaxy Home speaker will be revealed at CES 2019 which is scheduled from 8 Jan 2019 – 11 Jan 2019.
