From rugged romance to sweeping Texas-sized landscapes, Ransom Canyon captures the heart of the West — even though the actual filming happened far from the Lone Star State. Created by April Blair (Wednesday, All American), the Netflix drama follows three generations of ranching families navigating love, legacy, and loss in a fictional town so vivid, it feels real.

But while Ransom Canyon, Texas, might appear on maps, the show’s breathtaking scenery comes courtesy of another state entirely. So, where is Ransom Canyon filmed? In this article, we will explore that and more.

Where is Ransom Canyon Filmed?

Season 1 of Ransom Canyon was primarily shot across New Mexico, with production spanning Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Filming kicked off in January 2024 and continued for nearly six months, wrapping up in late June.

As per Moviedelic, over 700 local talents helped bring the series to life, including 380 crew members, 40 principal actors, and 300 background extras. Actor Tatanka Means, who plays Jake Longbow, shared his gratitude on Instagram:

That’s a wrap for me on #RANSOMCANYON season one! So grateful for my time on this show and all of the amazing people I was blessed to meet and work with. Definitely felt the love and good energy everyday on set.”

Although inspired by author Jodi Thomas’s Texas-set book series, the actual Ransom Canyon town is fictional — and Blair found her vision in a different kind of desert beauty.

Most of New Mexico is adobe architecture, and there’s this one little old mining town in northern New Mexico very close to the Texas border called Las Vegas, ironically, that just looks like an old Texas town,” Blair told Netflix. “It has all the old turn-of-the-century architecture and storefronts,” she added.

The team filmed several key scenes in Las Vegas, including around the historic Emmanuel Rosenwald Building at 205 Plaza Street. Other locations included Albuquerque — where Minka Kelly (Quinn O’Grady) reconnected with her roots — and Santa Fe, where the crew made use of the iconic Bonanza Creek Ranch.

I’ve never had to shoot in Albuquerque until this show,” Kelly told Tudum. “Going back in this way just took away the boogeyman… There were places I visited from my childhood that I would think, ‘Man, if the Minka at that time would have ever imagined I’d be back here shooting this show, I never would have believed it.’ It was really beautiful and there’s something divine about it.

Santa Fe’s Bonanza Creek Ranch — home to classic Western sets like the Western Town and Mountain Cabin — helped ground the series in that rustic aesthetic. As per Moviedelic, additional scenes were shot at Blame Her Ranch in Ribera, New Mexico. Spread across 2,000 acres at 7,000 feet elevation, this private retreat features panoramic views, authentic Western decor, and four distinct venues — perfect for Ransom Canyon’s mix of family drama and cowboy romance.

Josh Duhamel (Staten Kirkland), who hails from North Dakota, instantly connected with the outdoor life portrayed on screen.

I like the cowboy aspect of it because I sort of grew up around all that stuff,” he said to Tudum. “New Mexico is a spiritual place. You can see why so many artists migrate there and why it is known as the Land of Enchantment. You can watch the sunsets in the hillsides and the vistas are unbelievable.”

Kelly, a longtime equestrian, echoed the sentiment:

When they’re like, ‘Today is the horses’ — Oh my god, I can't believe this is my job,” she said. “It just made it really a beautiful experience, where all of us were just so excited to go to work every day.

Where will Ransom Canyon Season 2 be Filmed?

At the time of writing, Netflix has not officially renewed the show for season 2. As such, the filming locations haven't been revealed yet. However, all signs point to New Mexico once again serving as the heartland of Ransom Canyon. The state’s blend of rugged terrain, historic towns, and film-friendly infrastructure — like Bonanza Creek Ranch and Blame Her Ranch — make it a natural fit for continuing the show’s visual legacy.

April Blair’s creative vision centers not just on the characters, but the soul of the town itself, “At its core, Ransom Canyon isn’t just a town, it’s an idea,” she explained to Tudum. “It’s the painful longing for your first love. It’s the burning desire to protect your family — Ransom has it all.”

And with audiences falling in love with both the characters and the landscape, returning to New Mexico’s magical vistas would be the most fitting choice for a new chapter. Whether it’s the sunset-drenched hills or the line-dancing at the local saloon, Ransom Canyon continues to make a strong case that home — real or fictional — is where the heart is.

Stay tuned for updates on the next journey into the heart of Ransom Canyon. It is now streaming on Netflix.
