What is the plot of the Outrageous Series?

According to the official synopsis: “Outrageous is the true story of six sisters who refuse to play by the rules, attracting scandal and notoriety at every turn... A family saga like no other, this is a tale of bonds and betrayals, public scandal, political extremism, jealousy, romance – and coming of age in the most extraordinary circumstances. Can the fractured sisterhood survive?

Outrageous brings to life the complex and controversial story of the Mitford sisters, based on Mary S. Lovell’s acclaimed biography The Mitford Girls. Set in the tumultuous 1930s, the series traces the lives of six privileged siblings—Nancy, Pamela, Diana, Unity, Jessica, and Deborah—as their choices ignite public scandal, political upheaval, and personal heartbreak.

At the heart of the story is Nancy Mitford, the sharp-witted novelist and narrator of the series, who provides a biting lens into her family’s chaotic world. As Nancy toggles between craving independence and navigating the constraints of high society, her sisters break away from tradition in increasingly radical ways.

Diana scandalizes polite society with a divorce and a relationship with British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, while Unity grows disturbingly close to Adolf Hitler. Meanwhile, Jessica “Decca” Mitford rejects her aristocratic roots to embrace communism and falls for a like-minded cousin, making headlines of her own. Deborah eventually becomes a duchess and custodian of an English estate, and Pamela forges a quieter, rural path.

Toby Regbo plays their brother Tom Mitford, whose wartime fate only adds to the family’s turmoil. Anna Chancellor and James Purefoy portray their eccentric and bewildered parents—“Muv” and “Farve”—struggling to comprehend their daughters’ defiant lives.

Firebird Pictures, the production company behind the series, shares: “We couldn’t be more excited about the stunning cast we’ve assembled to breathe life into this epic tale of sibling rivalry and political radicalization... where old social orders are crumbling and a group of headstrong, rebellious sisters set out to change the world, with sometimes devastating consequences” (whattowatch).

Set against the backdrop of a Britain on the brink—masked by the decadence of the aristocracy—Outrageous examines how privilege, politics, and personal conviction collide. From drawing rooms to extremist movements, from fierce loyalty to deep betrayals, the series asks what happens when a family fractures under the weight of ideology, ambition, and forbidden love.

The show captures a vivid portrait of a family in freefall, unapologetically driven by desire, ideology, and the need to be heard. As the synopsis puts it: “This is the Mitfords as they really were: unapologetic, outrageous and utterly human.”

Who’s in the cast of the Outrageous Series?

Bessie said about the role: "I am thrilled and honoured to have the opportunity to bring someone as brilliant as Nancy Mitford to life. She was one piece of a truly fascinating family of remarkable and unique women, and I can't wait to tell their story" (via whattowatch).

"I'm thrilled to be bringing to life the extraordinary, glamorous and controversial Diana Mitford,” says Joanna. “The role brings a new challenge for me as I delve into her character, which was forged in a tumultuous period in British history, the 1930s, and it's undeniable that the political climate she navigated holds a striking relevance to the present day,” she added.

Is There a Trailer for the Outrageous Series?

The official teaser plunges us into the dazzling world of the Mitford sisters—six aristocratic siblings who roar onto screen with swagger and scandal. We’re teased with rapid-fire shots of lavish parties and political tension, all underscored by Bessie Carter’s Nancy.

Dazzling visuals highlight the sisters’ distinct personalities. Joanna Vanderham’s Diana glides through high society, Shannon Watson’s Unity flashes a defiant smirk, and Zoe Brough’s Jessica is seen passionately debating ideology. Then the trailer pivots, hinting at sharp fractures beneath the glamour: “We weren’t just a family; we were a force of nature.”

Tension escalates with somber piano notes as the screen paces from glittering ballroom to darker, intimate confrontations. Nancy’s voice returns, reflective and chilling: “And the truth can often be more outrageous than fiction.” The trailer leaves us craving more—who will betray, who will lead, and how far will each sister go under public scrutiny?

Episode Guide

Who were the Mitford Sisters?

The Mitford sisters were six extraordinary women born into British aristocracy in the early 20th century, known as much for their charm and wit as for their controversial lives. Nancy, the eldest, gained fame as a celebrated novelist and socialite, while the youngest, Deborah, became a memoirist and Duchess of Devonshire. But it was the sisters’ political leanings and personal dramas that made headlines and stirred public fascination.

Jessica, the family’s self-described “red sheep,” was a staunch communist who moved to America, while Diana and Unity embraced fascism, with Diana marrying British Union of Fascists leader Oswald Mosley, and Unity becoming disturbingly close to Adolf Hitler before attempting suicide upon his death in 1945. Their brother Tom, a Nazi sympathizer, died in Burma during WWII.

The least known sister, Pamela Mitford, married Derek Jackson, a millionaire atomic physicist. They stayed together till their divorce in 1951 (via History Hit). The upcoming series will trace the sisters’ tumultuous journeys through love affairs, ideological clashes, betrayals, and shifting family loyalties — lifting the veil on one of Britain’s most scandalous and captivating families.

Behind the Scenes

Created and written by Sarah Williams—the Outrageous series is inspired by Mary S. Lovell’s acclaimed biography The Mitford Girls (published as The Sisters in the U.S.).

The series is produced by Firebird Pictures with direction by Joss Agnew and Ellie Heydon, and Natasha Romaniuk serving as series producer. Executive producers include Elizabeth Kilgarriff, Matthew Mosley, and Craig Holleworth, with additional execs Helen Perry for UKTV and Robert Schildhouse, Jess O’Riordan, and Stephen Nye for BritBox.

The Mitford sisters were bright young things. So modern, so ahead of their time and always refusing to be boxed in by society,” casting director Rachel Sheridan told House & Garden. “Casting these sisters we needed vivacious, headstrong and fiercely bright actresses to bring the characters alive.” Sheridan adds, “It’s called Outrageous with good reason—it’s a historical period drama with an extremely modern feel.”
