Apple to Take on Google Glass with Its Own Smart Reality Glasses

By Nitish Singh / March 9, 2019

Apple has been focusing heavily on augmented reality, and the tech giant may expand its efforts with consumer “reality glasses.” According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the glasses might not function as standalone devices like Google Glass. Instead, they will function as accessories for the iPhone.

Apple would not be the first manufacturer to release a VR headset that needs an external device for core processes. LG had released a VR headset in 2016 that worked similarly and users needed to connect the LG G5 to the headset to use it.

According to reports, the upcoming Apple wearable device will be capable of processing data, come with location features and internet connectivity. While Apple has been pushing augmented reality with the release of its AR Kit, there has been no dedicated hardware available from the company so far.

Reports of an Apple headset have been going around since 2017, and initial reports had claimed that the device might come out as early as 2019. With two sets of announcements still to go this year for hardware releases, the device does have the possibility of being released in 2019.

Apple has been experiencing a slower rate of growth recently with the sales figures of the latest iPhones being disappointing according to analysts. The company has also failed to innovate enough in recent times with the tech giant losing over a dozen ranks in Fast Company’s “most innovative companies” ranking. The iPhone manufacturer is taking great measures to regain its market dominance. Apple is set to change how it produces its smartphones with India set to become the second major manufacturing location after China for producing iPhones. The move could help the manufacturer offer its phones at lower prices in Asia.
