ExpressVPN has partnered with Meta Quest to bring its privacy and security tools to the VR headset. The dedicated ExpressVPN app is now available on the Meta App Store, allowing users to enable full-device VPN protection directly on their headset. This move makes ExpressVPN one of the first VPN providers to offer dedicated privacy solutions in virtual reality.
Alongside the Meta Quest app, ExpressVPN introduced a new hybrid VPN browser extension, a first in the industry that combines VPN and proxy functionality in a single tool. This extension can operate independently to protect browser traffic or connect to the ExpressVPN app for full-device coverage.
Unlike traditional browser-only VPNs, the hybrid extension gives users more control over their online security. Features include:
ExpressVPN says the hybrid extension is designed for flexibility. Users can protect just their browser for a lightweight option or enable full-device protection with a single click. Shay Peretz, Group Chief Operating Officer at ExpressVPN, explained:
“Most VPNs make you choose: either a simple browser proxy or a full-device app. Our new hybrid browser extension does both in a single tool. You can protect just your browser when you want something lightweight, or switch to full-device coverage with a click. We’re excited to launch this first-of-its-kind extension in the industry."
The ExpressVPN hybrid browser extension can currently be installed from the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons library, with setup guides available on ExpressVPN’s support site.
For Meta Quest users, the extension will soon be available to protect browser traffic only, without affecting the rest of the device. This highlights the growing need for privacy solutions in environments like VR, which traditionally do not support full VPN apps.
ExpressVPN’s dual approach reflects how users increasingly access the internet across multiple devices and platforms, providing flexibility and choice in online security.
