“Our desire to tell this story stemmed from a very simple question — how can 10 people die at a music festival and no one knows how or why such a catastrophic tragedy happened?” director Yemi Bamiro told Netflix. 

“The objective for our film from the very start was to challenge all the misinformation that had become synonymous with Astroworld 2021,” Bamiro added.

On November 5, 2021, during the third Astroworld Festival at NRG Park in Houston, chaos erupted when Travis Scott took the stage. The crowd surged forward, trapping and crushing attendees near the front. The intense pressure led to a deadly stampede, leaving hundreds injured. Emergency responders were overwhelmed, struggling to reach victims through the dense and panicked crowd.

Did Anyone die at Astroworld 2021?

Yes, the 2021 Astroworld Festival tragically claimed the lives of 10 people, all of whom died from compressive asphyxia due to the crowd surge. The victims ranged in age from just 9 to 27 years old. Eight of them died on the night of the concert, including teenagers and young adults from Texas, Illinois, and Washington. Two others—22-year-old Bharti Shahani and 9-year-old Ezra Blount—succumbed to their injuries in the following days.

What Happened After the Astroworld Tragedy?

By June 2024, all 10 (via AP News & Rolling Stone) wrongful death lawsuits were settled privately for undisclosed amounts by Live Nation, Travis Scott, and other involved parties. A Houston grand jury later concluded that no individual bore criminal responsibility for the fatalities (via Texas Tribune).
