As Halpin explained, even when communication is encrypted, metadata (such as who is connecting to whom, when, and for how long) can still be tracked. Referencing Edward Snowden’s revelations, Halpin emphasized how meta data analysis alone can uncover significant details about a person’s online activity. Furthermore, as an academic and activist, Halpin saw "how meta data was used to track and target civilians and privacy advocates killed by drone strikes in Syria and Ukraine."
