Major Companies’ Websites Are Adding “Red Alert” To Support Net Neutrality Vote In Congress

By Goran Spasojevic / May 9, 2018

Today, companies including Tumblr, Pornhub, Reddit, Tinder, Vimeo, Imgur, Mozzila, GitHub, and many others have decided to put an alert on their websites regarding the Red Alert for Net Neutrality project that is organized by activist groups Fight for the Future, Demand Progress and Free Press Action Fund.

This project was organized in order to support the upcoming vote in Congress. Senator Ed Markey (D-MA) and other senators are filing the petition for a vote on net neutrality repeal. Markey's main tactic is to use Congressional Review Act (CRA) in order to reverse the federal regulations.

The idea of the Red Alert campaign is to let everyone know what is happening and allow the users to contact Congress and ask for more support regarding this resolution. According to The Verge, this campaign will stay active right before the vote starts.

You can check a full list of participants here.

At the moment Democrats are unanimously supporting this resolution which leaves Markey only two votes from the Republicans in order to pass the Senate. Unfortunately, passing the Senate is the easy part. The chances of this resolution to succeed in the House of Representatives is lower than in the Senate. Also, there is always the possibility that President Trump could put a veto on the whole thing. Still, this is currently the best and the fastest way to preserve net neutrality.

The websites should be launching Red Alert campaign on throughout the day and if you find yourself on Reddit at 2:30 PM ET today, you can stumble upon Senator Markey's Q&A live session regarding this issue.
