Kenya's Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy said on Saturday it was investigating a cybersecurity incident that affected the official website of the president, adding there was no evidence so far of unauthorized access to sensitive data or loss of information.
ICT Authority Detects Incident on Presidential Website
The incident was detected by the government's ICT Authority, which immediately activated cybersecurity response protocols upon discovery. The authority temporarily restricted access to the presidential website to contain the issue and allow forensic investigations to proceed without interference.
According to the ministry cited by Reuters, appropriate mitigation measures have since been implemented, and restoration of the website is now underway.
No Evidence of Data Exfiltration, Ministry Confirms
Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry William Kabogo Gitau addressed the scope of the incident directly in a statement posted on X. "At this time, there is no evidence of unauthorized access to sensitive data, data exfiltration, or loss of information. Government systems and digital services remain secure and operational," he said.
The statement signals that broader government infrastructure beyond the presidential website was not affected by the event. However, it was not revealed whether it was a DDoS attack, defacement attempt, intrusion attempt, or something else.
Forensic Investigation With Government Agencies and Partners
The ICT Authority is now working alongside relevant government agencies and technical partners to conduct a full forensic investigation and determine the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
