Children of Ukraine is a 2022 British documentary that tells the story of the millions of Ukrainian children directly impacted by Russia’s invasion that occurred in February. You will be able to stream this title online easily, even on the go or while traveling, so keep reading to find out more.

Part of ITV's Bafta-winning Exposure strand, Children of Ukraine is produced and directed by award-winning filmmaker Shahida Tulaganova and hears directly from 10 children, showing first-hand how the war has changed and shaped their lives as they live through the conflict. The synopsis says that by the end of October, 430 children had died during the war in Ukraine, and 823 were wounded.

Many of Ukraine’s children have spent months living in makeshift basements without access to regular food or water, running from bombs and sniper fire. We will hear testimonies from children like six-year-old Kira, who is living in Kharkiv, just a few miles from the new front line.

Kira said: "I was sleeping when it all started. We saw smoke in the window, and we started getting ready right away. We quickly went to the shop to buy food – we then came home, and I was told there was a basement. I was there all the time. I wanted to get out, but I was waiting for the boom, boom, boom to stop."

The first attacks in Ukraine are also described by 11-year-old Boris from Kyiv, who said: "My parents and my older sister were in the lounge, and they told me that an active military conflict between Ukraine and Russia had begun. I realized that the war had started. Some bad thoughts came to my mind that we’ll face hunger and become homeless. I thought it would be like World War II. I remember the sound of the siren from movies and cartoons, and it wasn’t anything special, but when I heard the real sound of a siren, I was so scared, I ran straight to my parents."

Eighteen-year-old V’yacheslav, and his four younger brothers and sisters, lost their mum after a Russian attack. He was left as the sole guardian of his siblings. He said: "I went shopping for food with mum and came back without her. I was all covered in blood. Only one question, Nikusya (my sister) asked me: 'Was it possible to save her?' That’s all. They understood everything."

Children like 10-year-old Illya and his family have spent six months trapped in a basement under heavy military bombardment. Illya said: "I always thought that Russia and Ukraine were like brothers. They said it all the time. It turned out not to be true."
