Key Takeaways
  • Firefox free VPN expansion: Mozilla added selectable servers in five countries and plans additional locations soon.
  • Monthly usage limits: Firefox’s free VPN includes 50GB monthly data cap across supported operating systems.
  • New mobile tools: Firefox 151 update adds Shake to Summarize support for Android users globally.

Mozilla Firefox has expanded its free built-in VPN service by adding support for more server locations through the latest Firefox 151 update. The browser maker says users can now manually choose VPN servers from multiple countries, giving them more flexibility while browsing online.

The update marks a notable change for Mozilla’s free VPN offering, which launched in March and has already crossed 1 million sign-ups, according to the company.

Firefox Users Can Now Select VPN Servers by Country

With the Firefox 151 update, users are no longer limited to an automatically assigned VPN connection. Mozilla now allows users to select servers from countries where its VPN service is currently supported.

Available locations include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, and Germany. Users who prefer not to select a location manually can still use the default option, which automatically connects them to the nearest available server.

Mozilla also confirmed that additional server locations will be introduced in the future, although the company did not provide a timeline or list of upcoming regions.

VPN services are commonly used to improve privacy and bypass geo-restrictions. For example, someone in the US connecting through a German server may be able to access Germany-only streaming content or websites that are otherwise unavailable in their region. Since the VPN changes the visible IP address, websites may detect the user as browsing from another country.

However, Firefox’s free VPN currently offers a much smaller global server network compared to major paid VPN providers. Services like NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark operate servers across a far larger number of countries.

Mozilla said the strong early adoption of its VPN shows that users are increasingly interested in privacy tools that are built directly into browsers and require minimal setup. The company also stated that its free VPN service does not rely on selling user browsing data or injecting advertisements into internet traffic.

Free VPN Services Still Come With Limitations

Although Firefox’s free VPN has gained popularity quickly, free VPN services still carry certain risks and limitations.

Some free VPN providers may use weaker encryption standards, collect user activity data, or display ads. In some cases, poorly managed VPN apps can also introduce security concerns or malware risks.

Firefox’s VPN itself comes with a monthly data limit of 50GB. While that may be enough for regular browsing, streaming content can consume data quickly. Standard-definition video streaming may use roughly 1GB per hour, while high-definition streaming can consume up to 3GB per hour. Music streaming usage can vary between 30MB and 150MB per hour depending on audio quality.

Mozilla currently supports the VPN on Windows 10 and 11, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, and iPadOS devices.

To activate the service, users need to install Firefox on their desktop or mobile device, open the browser, click the VPN icon in the toolbar, and sign in with a Mozilla account before enabling protection.

Firefox 151 Also Brings Mobile Enhancements

Alongside the VPN changes, Firefox 151 introduces additional mobile-focused features for Android and iOS users.

The update adds access to tools such as translations, voice search, and “Shake to Summarize,” depending on the user’s device and region.

The “Shake to Summarize” feature allows users to generate a summary of a webpage simply by shaking their phone. The tool first launched on iOS in September and is now being expanded to Android devices through the latest update.

The feature is currently available in English on Android, while iOS users can access it in English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, and Japanese.

Earlier this year, “Shake to Summarize” also received a special mention in Time magazine’s list of the best inventions of 2025.
