ExpressVPN has rolled out two significant updates within a week, enhancing both its Aircove router and mobile VPN apps to deliver a faster, smoother, and more user-friendly experience. The first update, released on May 22, brings AircoveOS v5.3 to the provider’s VPN-enabled router, introducing a more intuitive design to manage settings and features. According to ExpressVPN, the goal is to reduce setup hassle and improve overall stability when streaming, managing devices, or configuring the router for the first time.
Shortly after, the company released a complete redesign of its mobile apps for iOS and Android. The new look aims to simplify navigation while making the apps faster and more responsive. One of the key features added is a built-in speed test tool that lets users check the performance of the VPN servers in real-time. This can help users, particularly those streaming or gaming, to pick the best available server. Another new feature is the map view, which allows users to visually locate their server connections — a first for ExpressVPN’s mobile platforms.
Smart Location, ExpressVPN’s automatic server recommendation tool, has also been improved. It now uses a combination of speed, latency, and distance to suggest the top-performing servers, showing users the 3–5 fastest options upfront. Additionally, iPhone users now have the flexibility to choose the OpenVPN protocol alongside Lightway and IKEv2. “Lightway is still our go-to protocol for speed, reliability, and security, but we know one size doesn’t fit all,” said the provider. “Adding OpenVPN to iOS gives you more flexibility and control.”
The rollout for the mobile updates began on May 27, with full availability expected by May 30.
The AircoveOS v5.3 update also includes backend improvements. ExpressVPN updated system components such as the Linux kernel and Wi-Fi drivers, which should result in more reliable hardware performance. Improvements have also been made to how users set up Device Groups, with less scrolling required and the ability to assign a VPN location during group creation. Drag-and-drop functionality and dropdown options now make managing groups easier, particularly on mobile and tablets.
Additional updates, including smoother animations, helpful setup tips, and enhancements to Wi-Fi Link and parental controls, are expected to roll out soon. According to ExpressVPN, these changes are designed to help users “spend less time troubleshooting and more time enjoying the internet safely.”
