Dell Patent Hints at Laptop with Two Detachable Displays

By Nitish Singh / January 4, 2019

Double monitor setups are a boon for productivity for PC users, but unfortunately, such solutions are not available for laptop users. However, that may change soon with Dell reported being working on a portable computing device that will come with two detachable displays.

A recent patent filed by Dell reveals that it is working on a device with “Information Handling System with Multiple Detachable Displays.” We got access to some diagrams revealing what the device may potentially look like, but there is no reason to get our hopes up just yet as it may just be an idea never to be implemented on a consumer device.

Limited desktop space is a massive problem for laptop users and getting access to more screen real estate to work with can allow users to be more productive when showcasing presentations. According to information available from Dell’s patent filing, the displays can either be used facing the same direction, similar to that of a dual-monitor setup and also a mode where the screens face opposite directions.

A bar will hold the displays together using adjustable clamps. Dell is known to experiment with laptop form factors, but it is unknown when we will see the patented product in action. Just like the heavily rumored foldable Galaxy smartphone, it may take several years until we actually get to see the product launched officially.

While laptops are productive tools, other devices like the Surface Pro, iPad Pro and Chromebooks are taking over the portable computing device market. It is important for manufacturers like Dell to continue innovating to retain the appeal of laptops by adding more portability and productivity.
