Apple Announces ‘Peek Performance’ Event for March – Here’s What to Expect

By Ipsita Kabiraj / March 3, 2022

Apple has officially announced its first event of 2022 where the company is expected to announce a new low-cost iPhone model. The event will be broadcast worldwide on March 8. The company has teased it with the tagline "Peek Performance." The invite was shared by Greg Joswiak, Apple SVP Marketing, along with a teaser video. Let us take a look at some important details and all the products that we can expect to see.

How to Watch the Apple Event on March 8

Apple's Spring Event will be held on March 8 at 10:00 a.m. PT or 1:00 p.m. ET. The event will be held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and will be broadcast from Apple Park in Cupertino, California, US. You can watch it on Apple's website, its YouTube channel, and on the Apple TV app. You can access the app on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

What to Expect at Apple's 'Peek performance' Event

Let's take a look at what we can expect from the "Peek Performance" event on March 8, including all rumors and speculations.

iPhone SE 3

Apple may use this event to unveil the low-cost iPhone SE's third generation. Rumored to be priced at $399, this iPhone was first introduced in the spring of 2020. According to a Bloomberg report, it will have the same design as its predecessor, but with an improved camera, 5G support, and a faster processor.

This could turn out to be an enticing offer for users who are contemplating switching from Android to Apple.

iPad Air 5

The new iPad Air 5 is rumored to come out with an update to the Air model, with a faster processor and 5G support. It could also have Center Stage support for video calls and pack four speakers instead of two. In terms of camera quality, it is expected to have standard wide-angle and ultra-wide-angle camera lenses, similar to that of the iPhone 13. We may also see provisions for 1080p video recording in 25fps and 30fps.

iOS 15.4

Apple is planning to release this software update by mid-March. The company has already released the fifth beta of iOS 15.4, and we are likely to get more details about its arrival on March 8.

Some of the new features of the iOS 15.4 software update are Face ID support for people wearing masks, new emojis, a non-binary voice for Siri, and more. It will also have Universal Control, allowing users to control multiple iPads and Macs with a single trackpad/mouse and keyboard.

New Apple Silicon Machines

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, in his newsletter "Power On," mentioned 7 new Apple Silicon Macs that are supposed to come out this year. Apple Silicon is a processor technology developed by the company for its computing products. Earlier, Apple used to outsource its processor production (to Intel, for example); but has now decided to produce its own chips. Reports suggest that a higher-end Mac mini will have more ports than its current version. It will also have the same Apple Silicon as the current MacBook Pros.

Speculations are we might also get to see an M2 Mac mini this year. However, it is uncertain when exactly that might happen.

New MacBook Pro

Gurman also shared his observations on a new, entry-level MacBook Pro with a brand new M2 chip. The M2 is supposed to be more powerful than the M1 but less than the M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. The new MacBook will, however, not have the Touch Bar or a miniLED display, like its contemporaries.

It is meant to replace the 13-inch MacBook Pro and is set to be sold along with the 2021 MacBook Pro lineup.

Redesigned MacBook Air

We haven't had a new release of the MacBook Air since 2020, so it is very likely that we will be treated with a redesign sometime this year. The new design will charge via MagSafe, a wireless charger, according to reports. However, it is unlikely that we will see any additional ports.

Revamped iMacs

Currently, the 27-inch iMacs don't have their own silicon, but it is expected to change very soon. A revamped and high-end iMac with Apple Silicon, will offer a miniLED display with ProMotion technology. They will be powered by M1 Pro and M1 Max chips. They might be called iMac Pro, or Apple might just stick with its current name.

There is a considerable amount of interest in the market towards the new iMacs. This is because many users are looking for a desktop but with the specifications of a MacBook Pro.

What Else to Expect From the Apple Event?

While the aforementioned products are the ones we will most likely get to see on March 8, Apple's 2022 lineup also includes three Apple Watches, four iPhone 14 models, and new AirPods. Additionally, they are also coming up with a new feature that lets iPhones accept payments with the tap of a credit card. However, it is highly unlikely that all these products will be unveiled at the March 8 event.
