Key Takeaways
  • NordVPN Next-Generation Antivirus: Combines VPN, antivirus, and monitoring tools into one digital security platform.
  • Broader Threat Protection: Targets phishing, scams, malware, identity theft, and account takeover risks proactively.
  • Privacy-Focused Approach: Uses minimal data collection and machine learning to improve threat detection accuracy.

NordVPN has announced a major shift in how it presents its security offerings, placing its next-generation antivirus technology alongside its well-known VPN service as part of a broader digital protection platform.

The company says the move reflects how online threats have changed over time. While traditional antivirus software has long focused on detecting and removing malicious files, many modern cyber threats now rely on phishing attacks, online scams, stolen credentials, and social engineering tactics rather than malware downloads.

According to NordVPN, its security platform is now built around three key areas: secure internet connectivity through its VPN service, proactive threat protection through its next-generation antivirus technology, and monitoring tools such as Dark Web Monitor.

NordVPN Responds to Changing Cyber Threats

For years, antivirus software has primarily been associated with identifying and blocking harmful files. However, cybercriminals are increasingly using methods that do not require users to download malware at all.

Threats such as phishing websites, fake online stores, scam messages, identity theft attempts, and account takeover attacks often depend on tricking users into revealing sensitive information. NordVPN says these risks have highlighted the need for broader protection that goes beyond traditional antivirus functions.

The company's next-generation antivirus is designed to help detect and stop phishing attempts, scams, and malware before they can affect a user's device. NordVPN says the technology works alongside its existing privacy and encryption tools rather than replacing them.

Marijus Briedis, Chief Technology Officer at NordVPN, stated that while many people still use the term "antivirus" when discussing online protection, the nature of cyber threats has changed significantly.

He noted that modern security solutions should be capable of addressing current risks, including phishing attacks, scams, and malicious downloads, while continuing to maintain the privacy standards users expect.

Bringing Multiple Security Tools Into a Single App

NordVPN says the new approach aims to simplify digital security by combining several protection tools into a single application.

The company identifies three main pillars within the platform: its VPN service, the next-generation antivirus system, and monitoring features such as Dark Web Monitor.

Its antivirus technology includes protection against phishing and scams, malware detection, ad and tracker blocking, identity theft risks, account takeover attempts, and file and device threats. The goal, according to NordVPN, is to provide broader security coverage without requiring users to manage multiple standalone applications.

The company also shared usage data from April, reporting that its next-generation antivirus system blocked 4.8 million threats during the month. Malware-related threats accounted for more than 3 million of those detections.

Privacy Remains a Core Part of the Strategy

Alongside expanded protection capabilities, NordVPN says privacy remains central to how its security technologies operate.

The company states that its threat detection systems are designed to collect only the minimum amount of information needed to determine whether a threat is present. NordVPN says this approach allows users to receive protection without turning security software into a form of surveillance.

The company also uses dedicated machine learning models for different threat categories to improve both detection speed and accuracy.

Briedis said consumers should not have to choose between privacy, protection, and ease of use. He added that NordVPN's objective is to combine advanced VPN technology with next-generation antivirus features in a single application that better reflects how users think about online safety today.
