ExpressVPN has introduced a new hybrid browser extension that combines full VPN protection and browser-only proxy privacy in a single tool. The extension allows users to switch between protecting only their browser or enabling device-wide VPN coverage depending on how they are browsing.
This innovation works even when the ExpressVPN desktop app isn’t installed, offering privacy in environments where traditional VPN apps cannot run. Meta Quest users will also benefit, with the extension soon available through the Meta App Store to protect browser traffic inside the headset.
The hybrid browser extension addresses a long-standing limitation in online privacy tools. Traditionally, users had to choose between a full VPN that protects an entire device or a lightweight proxy covering only browser activity. ExpressVPN’s new extension combines both options:
This approach ensures flexibility, allowing the protection level to match real-world browsing habits instead of forcing users into a single option.
The extension retains all standard ExpressVPN privacy protections, including WebRTC leak blocking, HTML5 geolocation spoofing, access to global servers, and the Lightway protocol with post-quantum security.
A key addition is Smart Routing, which lets users define rules for specific websites or regions. For example, users can automatically route all “.it” domains through an Italian server. This site-specific control allows VPN protection to adapt automatically to browsing patterns, without manually changing settings.
The extension also supports both dark and light modes and runs on ExpressVPN’s high-speed 10Gbps servers, ensuring performance remains fast and reliable.
By operating entirely at the browser level, the hybrid extension can run in environments where VPN apps usually aren’t available. On Meta Quest, it will allow users to manage their virtual location directly from the browser while keeping the rest of the device unaffected.
This model reflects the shift toward browser-based activity for work, communication, entertainment, and immersive experiences. Users now have a simpler, more flexible way to protect their online privacy without installing multiple apps. When needed, switching from browser-only protection to full-device coverage is just a click away.
The ExpressVPN hybrid browser extension is now available on the Chrome Web Store and Firefox Add-ons library. Meta Quest users will be able to download it from the Meta App Store soon. Full setup guides are available on ExpressVPN’s support site.
