Windscribe has officially completed the rollout of its new server stack, FreshScribe, across its entire global fleet. After nearly a year of gradual deployment and testing, every Windscribe VPN server is now running on the upgraded infrastructure.

The company says the move brings notable improvements in speed, stability, streaming performance, and anti-censorship capabilities.

Kernel-Space WireGuard Replaces Boringtun

One of the biggest updates with FreshScribe is Windscribe’s shift from Cloudflare’s Boringtun, a user-space WireGuard implementation introduced in 2020, to a kernel-space WireGuard setup.

Windscribe notes that while Boringtun performed well initially, it struggled under high load. During peak usage, the process could max out CPU resources, causing jitter and slower WireGuard speeds.

The kernel-based implementation removes these bottlenecks, with the company reporting more consistent performance and significantly reduced latency. Windscribe users on social media have echoed those improvements, especially for gaming.

Faster Speeds and Reduced Jitter

Windscribe claims that its updated WireGuard stack places the VPN among the fastest services currently available. According to the company, even users on the free plan have seen speeds surpassing major competitors, including NordVPN, ExpressVPN, and Surfshark’s 100 Gbps servers.

Jitter, a frequent issue with the previous setup, is reportedly no longer a problem. User tests shared by the company show much more stable connections before and after the migration to kernel-space WireGuard.

Improved Streaming Performance

FreshScribe also brings an overhaul to the microservice Windscribe uses for streaming geo-blocked content. While actual streaming speed still depends on the residential proxy powering a location, Windscribe says several optimizations have resulted in noticeably better performance for many users.

Upcoming Features

With the infrastructure upgrade complete, Windscribe says several new features are now on the way.

1. IP Pinning and Rotation

Windscribe plans to introduce IP Pinning, allowing users to receive the same IP address every time they connect to a chosen location. A one-click IP rotation feature will also let users switch IPs without disconnecting.

This is already available for testing on the beta version of Windscribe’s desktop apps. The feature will be available to Pro subscribers (and Build-A-Plan users for the locations they pay for).

2. AmneziaWG Support

FreshScribe fully supports both client-side and server-side features of AmneziaWG, a WireGuard fork designed for censorship resistance.

Windscribe says it supports AmneziaWG 1.5 features, including traffic obfuscation to look like QUIC, NTP, DNS, and other UDP protocols. Version 1.0 features are also supported.

Internal user testing in regions such as Russia, China, Iran, UAE, and Egypt reportedly shows strong results for bypassing restrictions.

3. IPv6 Support

Windscribe is actively working on IPv6 egress support, which will enable dual-stack IPv4 and IPv6 when connected to the VPN.

Ingress IPv6 support, connecting to Windscribe servers over IPv6, is planned, but will arrive later.

4. Zero-Knowledge Connection Configurations

FreshScribe enables Windscribe apps to push certain user configurations directly to the VPN server, skipping the company’s centralized infrastructure.

This applies to settings like ROBERT filters, port forwarding, and static IPs. Windscribe says this approach increases user privacy and reduces backend maintenance overhead.

5. Configurable Multi-Hop

A new Configurable Multi-Hop system is also in the works. Users will be able to route traffic through any two Windscribe locations in any order.

An optional, separately billed upgrade will allow traffic to pass through residential proxies to help bypass VPN blocks.
