On September 25, digital rights group Fight for the Future is coordinating a Global VPN Day of Action. The campaign aims to raise awareness about ongoing efforts in several countries to restrict or ban virtual private networks (VPNs).

VPNs are widely used to safeguard online privacy, bypass censorship, and access information securely. Experts warn that banning these tools could have serious consequences for free expression and access to knowledge.

What’s at Stake

According to Fight for the Future, proposed VPN bans in different parts of the world could strip away online privacy, restrict access to global information, and silence vulnerable communities.

For groups like journalists, activists, and human rights defenders, VPNs are considered essential for safe communication. Everyday internet users also rely on them to protect personal data, especially when connecting through public Wi-Fi or browsing in restrictive environments.

Windscribe Joins the Global VPN Day of Action

VPN provider Windscribe confirmed it will actively participate in the campaign. The company says it plans to mobilize its users through:

Windscribe is also directing users to DefendVPNs.com, where people can sign a petition to oppose VPN bans.

Rebecca Rosenberg from Windscribe told TechNadu that the company views this as an urgent issue. “VPN bans would be devastating: they strip away privacy, block access to knowledge, and silence communities that rely on the open internet. For journalists, activists, and everyday people alike, the stakes could not be higher,” she said.

Broader Impact

The Global VPN Day of Action is designed to show how bans on VPNs would not just affect technology enthusiasts but millions of ordinary citizens worldwide.

Digital rights groups stress that undermining access to VPNs could weaken freedom of expression, hinder access to independent news sources, and create new risks for people in countries with heavy internet surveillance.
