HBO has officially announced another major round of casting for its upcoming Harry Potter series, revealing nine new actors who will bring to life some of the franchise’s most beloved and reviled characters in season one, which adapts Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Among the key additions are Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, and members of the Dursley and Weasley families—further filling out the show's growing ensemble.
Lox Pratt has been cast as Draco Malfoy, the pure-blood Slytherin student who quickly becomes Harry’s school rival. Opposite him, Johnny Flynn will portray his father, Lucius Malfoy, a prominent and intimidating figure in the wizarding world known for his close ties to the Ministry of Magic—and eventually, to Voldemort.
The roles were previously played in the Warner Bros. film series by Tom Felton and Jason Isaacs, respectively. Interestingly, Felton is currently reprising Draco on stage in Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway, while Flynn brings a blend of charm and menace that’s expected to shape the Malfoy legacy in a new way.
In a departure from the films, HBO is casting younger actors as Harry Potter’s Muggle relatives, in line with how they were written in J.K. Rowling’s original books.
Bel Powley (Masters of the Air, The Morning Show) has been cast as Petunia Dursley, Harry’s strict and neglectful aunt. Daniel Rigby will play her husband, Vernon Dursley. In the original novels, the Dursleys are in their mid-thirties when the story begins—quite a shift from the older portrayals by Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths in the movies.
Joining them are:
These nine new additions follow the May 27, 2025 reveal of the show’s young leads: Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley.
Gardiner and director/executive producer Mark Mylod shared their excitement about the trio, saying (via PEOPLE), “The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen. We would like to thank all the tens of thousands of children who auditioned. It's been a real pleasure to discover the plethora of young talent out there.”
Alongside the child stars and new adult characters, HBO previously confirmed a handful of high-profile names in other iconic roles:
Speaking with Collider, Frost acknowledged the shoes he’s stepping into with the beloved character, originally played by Robbie Coltrane, “You get cast because you're going to bring something to that. While I'm really aware of what went before me in terms of Robbie's amazing performance, I'm never going to try and be Robbie. I'm going to try to do something, not 'different'—I think you have to be respectful to the subject matter—but within that, there's scope for minutia.”
The Harry Potter series is being developed as a decade-long project, with each season adapting one of the seven books. Production is set to begin soon at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the U.K.—the same location where the original films were shot.
Francesca Gardiner is serving as showrunner and writer. Mylod, will direct multiple episodes and executive produce. J.K. Rowling also serves as executive producer, alongside Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.
In an official release, HBO reaffirmed its commitment to honoring Rowling’s books (via THR), “The series will be a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter book series by author and executive producer J.K. Rowling and will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years. Exploring every corner of the wizarding world, each season will bring Harry Potter and its incredible adventures to new and existing audiences.”
The series will stream exclusively on Max, and be available in key markets around the world, including the U.K., Germany, Turkey, and Italy.
