Big news, The Office fans—Peacock just gave us our very first look at The Paper, and it's already shaping up to be the spiritual successor we've been dying for. Unveiled at NBCUniversal’s glitzy Upfront presentation, the new mockumentary series finally has a name, a stacked cast, and yes, a jaw-dropping first-look image featuring Domhnall Gleeson doing his best Michael Scott impression—standing on a desk, rallying his team.
Gleeson, Oscar Nuñez (yep, Oscar’s back!), and Sabrina Impacciatore hit the stage to tease what’s next, and trust us, it sounds ridiculously good. Set in the same awkward, chaotic universe as The Office, this new series trades Dunder Mifflin’s paper sales for local journalism—but keeps all the lovable misfits, deadpan humor, and documentary-style mayhem we know and love.
A teaser clip was shown to advertisers behind closed doors, and those lucky enough to see it are calling it a home run. Between Gleeson’s “underdog” newsroom and the return of familiar faces, The Paper is looking like a fresh start with all the right ingredients.
Want to know who’s in, what’s new, and how The Paper ties back to Scranton? We’ve rounded up everything fans need to know—from casting updates to behind-the-scenes creators you’ll recognize. And you better believe we’ll be updating you as new info rolls in. A new era of workplace cringe comedy is about to begin—and this time, it’s got ink on its hands.
The Paper is officially set to premiere this September, streaming exclusively on Peacock. While an exact release date hasn’t been announced yet, the newsroom comedy will arrive in the fall lineup.
The Paper is a new mockumentary comedy from The Office creators, set in the same universe as the Emmy-winning NBC hit. The series follows the same documentary crew that once chronicled the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin as they search for a new subject—landing at a floundering Midwestern newspaper in Toledo, Ohio: The Truth Teller.
According to the official logline, “The documentary crew that immortalized Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch is in search of a new subject when they discover a historic Midwestern newspaper and the publisher trying to revive it.” (via Variety)
The series will document the staff of The Truth Teller, led by Domhnall Gleeson’s character—an idealistic new publisher with ambitious plans but a nonexistent budget. As a result, he’s forced to recruit the newspaper’s existing, untrained staff to act as volunteer reporters.
Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Oscar, now working as an accountant at the paper. A trailer shown during NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation revealed that he is none too happy to see the doc crew again. Sabrina Impacciatore plays the managing editor, while Gleeson’s unnamed character steps into a central leadership role reminiscent of The Office’s Michael Scott.
Creator Greg Daniels told The Hollywood Reporter, “It’s about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that’s much reduced from its glory days. A lot of the story lines are about how this guy, Domhnall Gleeson’s character, is trying to restore this paper, and he just doesn’t have the budget for hiring reporters, and he has to use all the staff that work there on a volunteer basis to be reporters. They’re completely untrained and don’t know what they’re doing.”
He added, “It’s a fruitful premise. There’s a tremendous history for local papers. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody’s news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google.”
Set in the bustling yet fading newsroom of The Truth Teller, The Paper blends satirical office dynamics with a nostalgic nod to the decline of local journalism—all through the lens of a returning documentary crew and a fresh set of quirky characters.
While The Paper hasn’t released a trailer yet, Peacock has unveiled a first-look image from the series. The photo offers a glimpse at the ensemble cast, featuring Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, and The Office alum Oscar Nuñez. Take a look below:
The Paper is created for television by The Office’s Greg Daniels and Nathan for You co-creator Michael Koman, who serve as co-creators, writers, and executive producers. Joining them as executive producers are The Office's original creators, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, along with Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas (formerly Reveille).
The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studios Group. Production on the mockumentary-style comedy began in July 2024, and much of the crew from The Office has returned for this project.
At the 2025 NBCUniversal’s upfront presentation, cast members, including Oscar Nuñez, Domhnall Gleeson, and Sabrina Impacciatore took the stage to promote the series. Nuñez joked about his character’s new home, saying, “Greg heard me and moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio, which has three times the population of Scranton. So it’s nice to be heard.” (via THR)
