Automaker Stellantis has announced the discovery of a data breach stemming from unauthorized access to a third-party vendor's platform. The incident has exposed the personal information of some of its North American customers, highlighting the persistent cybersecurity challenges facing the automotive industry.

Third-Party Cybersecurity Incident Details

The breach was detected at a third-party service provider that supports customer service operations for the Stellantis parent company in North America, known historically as Chrysler. According to Reuters, the unauthorized access resulted in the exposure of basic customer contact information.

The company clarified on Sunday that the compromised data did not include any financial details or other highly sensitive personal data, and the total number of affected customers was not specified.

In response to the discovery, Stellantis immediately activated its incident response protocols to contain the threat and understand its scope. The company stated it has notified the relevant authorities about the security failure and is in the process of directly informing customers who were affected by the data breach.

Stellantis is also cautioning customers to be vigilant against potential phishing attempts that could leverage the exposed contact information.

Cybersecurity in the Automotive Industry

This event is the latest in a series of cyber attacks impacting global automakers, underscoring the risks associated with interconnected supply chains. When a company relies on external vendors for critical services, any vulnerability in that third party's security can create a direct risk of customer data exposure.

This incident follows a recent disruptive Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack, further emphasizing the growing threat of third-party cybersecurity failures.

As vehicles become more connected and data-driven, the attack surface for cybersecurity in the automotive industry expands, making robust vendor risk management and comprehensive security measures more critical than ever.
