Snapchat Users Will Be Able To Shop on Amazon Using Visual Search

By Nitish Singh / July 12, 2018

Snapchat will soon have a visual search feature that will allow users to shop on Amazon using any smartphone camera. Traces of code were found by tipster Ishan Agarwal who discovered the Visual Search feature called Eagle in the latest version of the Android app. The feature is hidden away and is not fully functional yet, but it should go live sometime in the near future.

The report by the tipster is further backed by Snapchat’s own statements from earlier this year that revealed the company’s interest in visual search technology. Snapchat was also set to acquire Blippar, a machine vision company. While the deal did not fall through, the social app is investing into the technology to further its offerings for mobile users.

Snapchat will be sending the Visual Search Data to partners like Amazon and Shazam to get search results. Starting up the camera in the ‘Eagle’ mode and scanning a barcode or simply pointing your camera towards a product will allow you to search for Amazon products that match what you are looking at.

Snapchat started off as a private photo sharing app which allowed users to send each other photos, but with a plethora of features like AR games and Stories making it into the app, the platform has evolved in a truly social app. The Facebook-owned social platform is experiencing a lot of success recently with partnerships with events like the Wimbledon, FIFA World Cup and more. Once the new Visual Search feature goes live, it would mean more profits for both Snapchat and Amazon.
