Netflix’s Sirens is here, and the story of two sisters and one ultra-wealthy socialite is the talk of the internet right now. In the series, Simone (Milly Alcock) and Devon (Meghann Fahy) are estranged sisters. One day, Devon, the elder sister, comes to find Simone because Bruce, their father, is suffering from Dementia.
But Simone isn't interested. She wants to stay in her rich and happy life on an island as the assistant of her boss, Michaela (Julianne Moore). Devon feels that her sister and her boss are too close, almost like in a cult. So, she plans on getting Simone out of Michaela’s clutches. So, does she succeed? And what happens to Michaela? In this Sirens Netflix ending explained article we will talk about it all.
No, Devon isn’t able to take Simone back home with her. She tries to convince her little sister to return so that they can take care of their father, but she refuses. It’s simply because Simone has already paid the price of tending to a parent. She was the primary caretaker of her mother and was in the car with her when she tried to kill herself.
Also, she had to be taken to foster care because their father was negligent toward her. She was malnourished and lived in terrible conditions. All this happened while Devon was at college, trying to pursue her dreams while her sister was suffering. However, Devon did realize her mistake and came back to help. However, this entire sequence of events made Simone not want to be anywhere near her father.
At the end of the series, Peter, Michaela’s husband, proposes to Simone. She then replaces Michaela as the new trophy wife of the old billionaire. But does he love her? Sirens doesn’t give a definitive answer to this question, but it feels like Peter thinks that sharing one heart-to-heart conversation is enough for love.
But maybe he doesn’t really care about love as much as having a trophy wife. After all, he seems to want admiration and love from his wife, but putting in the effort to give back the same is something he doesn’t seem quite as invested in.
The final shot of Sirens shows Simon standing at the edge of a cliff and staring at the sunset. She smiles a little, and the show ends. That smile could mean a lot of things. For one, it might signify that she has achieved what she wanted- peace and wealth away from her family.
Throughout the show, she worshipped Michaela, and it seemed like she wanted to fit into her world. However, maybe her plan from the beginning was to usurp Michaela and become the wife of a billionaire so that she could lead the life of luxury she always wanted. So, that little smile at the end was perhaps of victory as well.
Peter left Michaela because she kept a picture of him and Simone kissing hidden away from him to use as ammo when needed. He wanted her to talk to him about it instead of weaponizing that kiss. This made him think that she doesn't care about him and only wants him for his money.
However, this is just one reason why he left her. Initially, Michaela and Peter had an affair while he was still married to Jocelyn. This caused Peter and Jocelyn to separate (the divorce was a mutual understanding), and their kids now hate Michaela. To top it off, Peter has cut ties with them and blamed Michaela for it.
But she never hated the kids or wanted Peter to never see them. All she hated was that they treated her badly, and Peter never stepped in to correct them. Later, Michaela suspected that Peter was having an affair and that she was going to be replaced, like she did to Jocelyn. This cocktail plus Simone’s presence, ultimately causes Peter to leave Michaela.
It doesn’t look like Simone loves Peter. Simone clings to Peter because she knows that he can give her the life she wants. This desire to have a luxurious life gets triggered even more when she realizes that she will have to move back home and help her dad.
After all, she had led a traumatic life since childhood, and it was the reason why she cut off all ties with her family. So, she wants to escape that past and erase any probability of ever going back there. The only person who can give Simone that escape is Peter. He is like her knight in shining armor.
Even though the name of the show signifies that Simone enchanted Peter with her charm and siren song, the truth is that Peter is the one caging her in a gilded cage. But maybe that’s what Simone wants, and unlike Michaela, if she can give Peter kids to continue his legacy, then she can probably last longer than her.
However, will that be enough for her? Or will she also seek escape after some time has passed and she has grown comfortable with her life?
Yes, Michaela does forgive Simone for taking Peter away from her. When Michaela and Devon are leaving the island, the latter apologizes to Michaela for what her sister has done. But Michaela holds no grudges and in fact it seems like she understands why things happened the way it did.
Throughout the series, it seemed like Michaela looked at Simone like a sort of daughter figure. Since she didn’t have children of her own, maybe that was indeed the case. So, she is perhaps easily able to forgive someone who is like a child to her. Also, she is content enough to know that Simone will look after the aviary.
The ending makes it seem like Michaela lost to Simone, but Michaela is finally free in a way that Simone isn’t yet.
In an interview with Variety, Meghann Fahy revealed that the show ends in a natural way but that she is open to exploring more of the characters, especially one character, and its not even her own. She said:
“It ends in a very natural way, but I can imagine what the characters’ worlds become. I, for one, would love to know what happens to Michaela, where she goes. So I think it’s definitely within the realm of possibility. We didn’t talk about it on set, but I would love to do more.”
Sirens is streaming now on Netflix.
