A Rostelecom denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on Monday evening compromised digital connectivity across the Russian Federation. This incident overwhelmed the state-run telecommunications infrastructure and successfully crippled prominent digital services, disabling access to critical online platforms for millions of users.
DDoS Attack on Russian Telecom Infrastructure
The DDoS network intrusion specifically targeted Rostelecom's core routing infrastructure, affecting users in dozens of cities. "On the evening of April 6, a powerful DDoS attack was detected on the Rostelecom network. Incoming traffic was filtered, which affected the availability of some internet resources," Rostelecom has told TASS.
Citizens reported losing access to several services, including:
- The GosUslugi government services portal,
- Rutube,
- Multiple digital banking systems,
- Steam,
- Telegram,
- Valorant,
- League of Legends.
To contain the Runet internet incident, system administrators reportedly implemented stringent emergency network filtering, which Rostelecom blamed for the disruption.
During this mitigation phase, users reported that routine Russian internet services were completely inaccessible. Yet, users could allegedly access government-approved "whitelist" websites engineered to remain functional during severe connectivity blackouts, according to The Record.
Future Network Stability
Regional authorities enforce tighter control over domestic digital ecosystems, the stability of online services remains precarious. Russia's recent plans for a VPN crackdown include limiting usage, increasing costs, and restricting access to platforms for users.
On Friday, reports surfaced of a Russian banking outage that disrupted financial services, including Sberbank, suspected to have been caused by the nation’s VPN-blocking initiatives. In March, Apple removed VPN clients from the Russian App Store, and researchers claimed Russia’s state-backed MAX app may detect VPN usage.
Last month, 12 hacktivist groups targeted 110 organizations around the world, as almost 150 DDoS attacks occurred in over 15 countries, and Deutsche Bahn confirmed a DDoS hit its IT systems in February.
