Paraguay’s government has reported a potential hacking incident involving President Santiago Pena’s X account (formerly Twitter) in an official press release, confirming irregular activity on the president's account.
The breach came to light when the account unexpectedly promoted Bitcoin as legal tender in the country, alongside a fabricated announcement of a $5 million Bitcoin-backed reserve fund. Â
Government representatives issued a public statement urging citizens to disregard posts from the account until further notice.Â
Paraguay's national cybersecurity task force and X are currently collaborating to investigate the security breach. Â
While X has not yet issued a formal response, the incident demonstrates the growing need for advanced cybersecurity measures, especially for accounts tied to state officials.Â
In June 2024, Microsoft India's official X account was stolen by cryptocurrency scammers, and the same happened to the Falcon Feeds profile in January 2025.
This hacking highlights the importance of heightened security protocols, such as two-factor authentication, regular monitoring, and digital hygiene practices for protecting high-profile accounts.Â
