As per Netflix, The Old Guard 2 will see the immortal guards going on another mission to protect the world. The logline states, “With Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts) still in exile after his betrayal, and Quynh (Veronica Ngô) out for revenge after escaping her underwater prison, Andy grapples with her newfound mortality as a mysterious threat emerges that could jeopardize everything she’s worked towards for thousands of years.”
It further states, “Andy, Nile (KiKi Layne), Joe (Marwan Kenzari), Nicky (Luca Marinelli) and James Copley (Chiwetel Ejiofor) enlist the help of Tuah (Henry Golding), an old friend who may provide the key to unlocking the mystery behind immortal existence.”
Creator Greg Rucka revealed to Netflix more details about what is coming up in the sequel. He said that Andy has lost her mortality while it is Nile who has become immortal and joined the group. With time running out, Andy wants to use whatever time she has left to do good.
Rucka says, “What I find most fascinating about these immortal characters is that fundamentally, they all face the same questions we do: ‘What am I doing here? What is the purpose of my life?’” So, what is Andy planning on doing? The creator says that the second film will raise the “legitimacy of that mission.”
Also, he said that “Booker’s been punished for his sins by being sent into exile, which is pretty much the worst thing you can do to people who live for hundreds and hundreds of years.”
What more can fans expect from The Old Guard season 2? Director Victoria Mahoney confirms that there will be better action than the first one. She said, “My mandate every time we went out the door to scout was, ‘I do not want to visit any locations, routinely seen as an audience member in a number of my favorite films. I relentlessly pushed toward the unexpected.”
Layne revealed to Tudum, “In the first film. Nile is the newbie. She doesn’t know anything, she is asking a lot of questions. In the second film, she’s still asking questions — that’s just who she is, she’s a very curious person — but she’s found her place within the team. We get to witness the things that she may have learned from the team over the months: new skills, new weapons.”
The trailer for The Old Guard 2 is intense and hints at the new threat that the team will have to deal with. The trailer opens with Andy saying that she is at peace, but Nile jokes that she didn’t look too much at peace while throwing someone out of the window.
Uma Thurman’s villain, Discord, menacingly says, “For centuries, I have watched you fight to protect humanity while forsaking your own kind. I will destroy you and everything you stand for with a power you can’t even imagine yet.” The trailer reveals that Thurman’s antagonist is “the first of the immortals.”
We also see Quynh’s underwater tomb being lifted by some sailors in a boat. As they smash the front portion of the tomb, her face peers out in horror, relief, and disbelief. The trailer ends with Andy and Discord fighting it out for their lives in a one-on-one combat. Check out the trailer below:
