Oculus Go Adds Support for Sling TV, ESPN and Fox Now

By Nitish Singh / December 18, 2018

Facebook acquired Oculus in 2014, but the VR headsets dropped in popularity over the years with products like the Microsoft Holo Lens and HTC Vive becoming more popular. The Oculus Go received a massive update that brings support for multiple streaming services to the headset.

Oculus has partnered with Sling TV, ESPN and Fox Now to bring content from all three services to the Go headset. There are no subscription plans included with the headset and users will have to pay the monthly subscription fees for individual content providers separately. However, anyone who grabs a new Oculus Go before January 15 will get free $80 Sling TV credit that can be used for on-demand content or monthly subscriptions.

To access the new content available on Oculus Go, users need to download individual apps from the Oculus Store. Other streaming services like Hulu and Showtime have been available on the VR headsets for quite some time along with first-party apps like Oculus Rooms and Oculus Video.

VR headsets are heavily marketed for gaming, but video consumption is also viable on headsets like the Oculus Go. While the resolution of the content might not be anything to write home about, users effectively get access to a portable 180” screen with no space constraints using the headsets. The Oculus software is far from perfect, and the user interface is still a few ways off from being perfect.

There has been a lot of interest in VR lately with Facebook shutting down Building 8 projects in favor of VR/AR content, which suggests that we can expect more features and content on Oculus headsets soon.
