NordVPN has announced that it will discontinue Meshnet, its device-linking and traffic-routing feature, starting December 1, 2025. The shutdown means that all related functionality, including personal mesh networks, device-to-device connections, and routing traffic through other devices, will no longer be available.

The decision does not affect NordVPN’s core services. The VPN itself will continue to function normally, with the change applying only to Meshnet.

What Users Need to Know

For those currently relying on Meshnet, NordVPN recommends preparing alternative solutions before the service is phased out. Users who primarily use Meshnet for secure file sharing are advised to switch to NordLocker, the company’s encrypted storage and file-sharing service.

For other networking features, NordVPN suggests exploring third-party mesh networking tools available on the market, depending on individual use cases.

Why Meshnet Is Being Shut Down

According to NordVPN, Meshnet was created to give users greater control over their networks by allowing device connections across different locations. It was offered free of charge as an add-on to the company’s VPN subscription.

However, despite initial interest, the service never gained widespread adoption. NordVPN explained that only a relatively small group of dedicated users actively used Meshnet, and the feature did not resonate with the broader VPN community.

Maintaining Meshnet required significant resources, which the company has decided to redirect toward improving its primary services. NordVPN stated that its focus moving forward will be on enhancing speed, security, and overall VPN functionality for the majority of its customers.

The company emphasized that it had considered multiple alternatives to keep Meshnet alive but found none of them viable.

Looking Ahead

NordVPN expressed gratitude to those who used Meshnet and contributed feedback during its development. While the feature is being discontinued, the company reaffirmed its commitment to delivering privacy and security tools that serve a wider audience.

With Meshnet’s shutdown, NordVPN appears to be doubling down on strengthening its core VPN services, aiming to improve performance and expand features that benefit the majority of its global user base.
