Nintendo Switch Online Service Release Date Narrowed Down

By Nitish Singh / August 10, 2018

The highly anticipated Nintendo Switch Online service is scheduled for launch next month, and its release date just got narrowed down by the Japanese gaming giant. Nintendo revealed in their Twitter account that the service would be released in the second half of September. According to the company “The service provides access to online play & Save Data Cloud backup in compatible games and a growing library of NES titles with added online play."

The Nintendo Switch Online service will cost $20 per year with the option of paying a monthly fee of $3.99 or $7.99 for three months. Alternatively, a family group of up to 8 people can be made for $34.99 annually, which allows the primary account holder to invite seven others to be part of the group and access the service. Online play was available for free to all Switch owners since the console launched in March 2017. However, it will soon be part of the paid service.

iOS and Android users who own a Nintendo Switch will be able to use their phones or tablets as a voice chat device for online games if they pay for the online service. Even free games like Fortnite will require the $20 subscription to play online. Subscribers will get access to 20 free NES games with titles like Super Mario Bros. 3, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda and more. There will also be special discounts for subscribers on the Nintendo eShop. With the Switch hitting 20 million in sales, the console is gaining massive popularity, and upcoming titles like Pokemon Lets Go and Super Smash Bros will definitely have more fans picking up the console.
