Microsoft Leaks Its Support Requests Via Its Partner Portal

By Nitish Singh / January 18, 2019

If you filed a support request to Microsoft today, then it is possible that strangers have been able to see it due to a data leak. In what happens to be a very major technical blunder by the tech giant, anyone who is registered on the company’s Partner Portal was able to see every single support ticket that was filed today no matter where they were filed.

Fortunately, private user data has not been leaked, which would have led to a PR nightmare for Microsoft. The company’s small business specialist contacted The Register and informed the publication about the leak. While trying to check the status of a ticket that was submitted by the individual, he was able to see all tickets filed worldwide. It is unlikely that the European Union or other authorities will take action against the company because of the incident as private user data was not leaked that could put customers at risk.

Microsoft Partner Ilkley IT Services’ Warren Llloyd revealed “You can't see the contents of the ticket, but you can see the case number and title... So you can’t see any customer info, just the title of what’s been submitted.”

Microsoft is yet to release an official statement about the mishap, which happens to be a first for the company. The tech giant is normally not involved in any technical mishaps. With the company set to work with the US government in the future, such leaks could prove to be very harmful. The Partner Portal has been restored to normal with no word on how all tickets became public in the first place.
