On the evening of February 22, 2022, the heart of Amsterdam’s Leidseplein square turned into a scene of terror as a heavily armed man stormed the Apple Store and held a customer hostage at gunpoint. Over the next five hours, the hostage crisis would grip the Netherlands, ending in a dramatic police intervention and igniting a nationwide debate.

Now, Netflix’s iHostage, the hostage movie directed by Bobby Boermans, brings that harrowing night to the screen—blending real events with fictional storytelling to explore one of the country’s most surreal modern-day standoffs.

The real-life Crisis that Shook the Netherlands

As per TIME, at approximately 5:30 p.m., a 27-year-old man entered the Apple Store armed with a handgun and automatic weapon, clad in camouflage gear. He took a 44-year-old Bulgarian man hostage and demanded €200 million in cryptocurrency and a safe escape. As chaos unfolded, nearly 70 people—including customers hiding in closets and storage spaces—were evacuated from the building by special forces.

Gunfire was exchanged early in the standoff, and authorities initially feared the suspect was carrying explosives. Outside, police shut down the surrounding area, workers in nearby stores were ordered to shelter in place, and ambulances lined the square. Throughout the night, the suspect sent selfies and photos to local media outlets, adding to the frenzy on social media.

The crisis came to a shocking end at around 10:30 p.m., when the suspect asked for water. Police used a robot to deliver a bottle. As the hostage moved to collect it, he seized the moment to run. The gunman gave chase—only to be struck by a police vehicle waiting outside. He was rushed to a hospital but died from his injuries the next day. Authorities later confirmed he had not been carrying explosives.

The suspect was later identified as Abdel Rahman Akkad, an Amsterdam resident with a history of legal troubles. He had prior convictions for weapons possession and harassment. According to Het Parool, he was known to social services and had previously been sentenced to community service and issued a restraining order for stalking an ex-girlfriend.

The Hostage Movie Inspired by a Night of Terror

Bobby Boermans, the director of the hostage movie, lives just around the corner from the Apple Store and was deeply affected by the incident. “Fortunately, hostage situations like this are scarce in the Netherlands. That’s what made this incident bizarre,” Boermans told TIME. “A man, demanding 200 million in cryptocurrency, chose to take a hostage in broad daylight on one of the busiest squares in Amsterdam,” Boermans added.

Boermans was fresh off shooting The Golden Hour—a Netflix thriller about a fictional terror attack in the Netherlands—when the Apple Store standoff occurred. He recalled being struck by the silence that followed the chaos. “Only the bullet holes in the glass remained. That weird juxtaposition stayed with me. The surreal calm after the storm,” he said. “It made me ask: what happened during those five terrifying hours?” he added.

Those questions eventually led to iHostage, which was released on Netflix recently. While the hostage movie closely follows the real timeline of the hostage crisis, Boermans condensed the story and created five fictional characters to represent the many people involved. “Most of the story beats you see on screen are based on things that actually happened,” he said.

We changed the dialogue and gave all characters fictional names so they couldn’t be traced back to the individuals involved. In reality, hundreds of people were involved in the stand-off, but we focused on five main characters—each from a different background, each offering a unique perspective,” he added.

The Controversy over the Ending

The final moments of the hostage crisis—when police used a vehicle to neutralize the suspect—sparked heated debate in the Netherlands. “It was a unique and highly decisive act of violence, the result of a split-second decision made by one of the special forces operators,” Boermans noted. A video of the final moments went viral almost immediately after, and the entire country began discussing it. Some people applauded the action, while others were more hesitant or conflicted about how it was handled,” he added.

An investigation cleared the officer involved of any wrongdoing. The Dutch Public Prosecution Service determined that the use of force was justified, citing the urgent need to protect lives.

A Deeper Message Beneath the Usual Hostage Movie Drama

Boermans hopes his hostage movie will be more than just a gripping thriller. The director sees the film as a way to shed light on broader issues surrounding mental health and public safety. “My hope is that this film will spark an important dialogue about the increasing number of individuals with mental health issues living on the streets,” he said. Many well-meaning, everyday citizens are falling through the cracks… These are individuals who might have received assistance before tragically resorting to such terrible actions,” he added.

To craft the story of his hostage movie, Boermans spoke with Apple Store employees, police negotiators, and others involved in the response. “I want the audience to experience both the intensity and the heart,” he explained. “Ultimately, it's up to the viewer to decide who they root for and how they interpret the depicted violence,” he further added.

iHostage may dramatize a real-life nightmare, but at its core, it's a story about human resilience, the fragile line between chaos and calm—and how even in moments of terror, choices made in split seconds can define lives.

iHostage is available for streaming on Netflix.
