The Synanon Fix Preview
Synanon was a revolutionary drug rehabilitation program in the late 1950s, but it later evolved into a communal living experiment that drew criticism for abuse and cult-like conduct. The Synanon Fix tells the narrative of this center through the firsthand recollections of former members.
In 1958, Charles "Chuck" Dederich's vision for Synanon began as a run-down storefront rehabilitation center in Santa Monica that served homeless heroin addicts. Synanon became a respected institution in the developing recovery community across the United States thanks to its extremely successful confrontational talk therapy known as The Game.
Chuck and his wife Betty oversaw Synanon's growth into a sophisticated system of self-sustaining companies and diversified and egalitarian communal living by attracting non-addicts, so-called lifestylers, who sought community. The duo used their donations to fund Synanon.
Chuck's unconventional therapies, however, became increasingly harsh over time, resulting in paranoia, cult-like demands, and, eventually, charges of child abuse, assault, and a failed murder. The Synanon Fix explores the organization’s downfall as it devolved into a deeply harmful force.
