Google has renamed its 'Google Fi VPN' service to 'VPN by Google,' continuing a broader rebranding effort that began with Pixel devices in 2024. The move is part of Google's push for consistent naming across its VPN services, but users won’t see any new features or technical changes.
As reported by 9to5Google, the transition took place quietly and follows the same rebrand that saw Pixel 7 and newer devices switch from 'Google One VPN' to 'VPN by Google' last year. Now, Fi users are seeing the same update.
A message in the Fi app reads: “Beginning May 22, VPN controls are moving to Settings. To make sure your online activity is protected, turn on VPN by Google now.” The VPN settings are shifting into the phone’s system settings, where users can manage the feature directly.
For those using a Pixel 7 or newer, the rebranded VPN is already built into the device and accessible via the Fi app or phone settings. The service remains available in 25 countries, including the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, and several EU nations.
The new branding does not bring performance upgrades or new security features. Google has clarified that this is only a name change. Users on Android and iOS can expect the same functionality as before.
This change also comes after Google shut down 'Google One VPN' last year, citing limited usage. While that service was discontinued, Google kept a VPN option for Pixel devices and Fi subscribers, now under the same unified brand.
In short, this rebrand is a cosmetic shift rather than a functional update. Users can continue using the VPN as before, now under a more uniform name.
