Plot

Since production began in February, Faceoff: Inside the NHL has given film crews unprecedented access to the league’s top stars—a group of mostly twentysomethings who’ve grown up in the social media age and are comfortable in front of cameras. Unlike previous NHL documentaries that focus on teams, this series highlights individual personalities.

Hockey players are known for keeping their individuality under wraps in this team-first sport, but Box to Box co-founder Paul Martin found players surprisingly open to the concept during the 2024 All-Star weekend. William Nylander was one of the first to embrace the idea, with episode one spotlighting his friendship and rivalry with David Pastrnak.

The series also features Colorado Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog, New York Rangers captain Jacob Trouba, Vancouver Canucks captain Quinn Hughes, and more.

Episodes five and six, titled ‘Cup or Bust: Parts I and II,’ document the dramatic 2024 Stanley Cup Finals between the Oilers and Panthers, with Florida going up 3-0 before Edmonton’s epic comeback.

'Faceoff' delves deep into the lives of these players both on and off the ice, capturing quiet, reflective moments alongside the intensity of the game. Viewers gain insight into the grit, talent, and sacrifice it takes to succeed in the NHL, with exclusive access to the players’ inner circles of teammates, coaches, and family.

This series continues the expanding partnership between the NHL and Amazon, which began in 2021. Amazon Web Services (AWS) has powered the NHL’s cloud-based content delivery system and advanced analytics, such as NHL Edge IQ. Previous collaborations include 'All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs' and other hockey documentaries.

Prime Video is also home to Prime Monday Night Hockey, which streams national regular season games, and NHL Coast to Coast, a weekly whip-around show, both available exclusively to Prime members in Canada.
