Apple to Release Two New Wireless AirPods by 2020

By Nitish Singh / December 3, 2018

Analyst Ming Chi Kuo from TF International Securities revealed that Apple is working on two new AirPods models currently and they may become the most sought-after accessories from the company yet. He also expects that AirPods sales may climb from 16 million in 2017 to 100 million by 2021.

Kuo revealed that a new wireless model is set to release in 2019 which will come with a wireless charging case similar to the one Apple announced with the AirPower in 2017. A second model is in the works for a 2020 release which will feature a complete redesign but not much less is known at this point.

The upcoming AirPods will have flex-boards to make the internals more rigid, and it’s expected to raise manufacturing costs as well, which means that we can expect a slight price increase in the upcoming models. Apple will redesign not only the AirPods but also the charging case which can raise manufacturing costs by up to 60%.

Both the AirPods and the charging case will feature upgraded Bluetooth standards. The charging case will be sold separately as well for users as an add-on accessory for current generation Apple AirPods. We can also expect features like sweat resistance, tighter Siri integration, and other miscellaneous features.

Apple had hyped up the release of the AirPower mat last year in September, but we got no news about the product in either of the major conferences we’ve had this year. We saw the release of the new iPhone X lineup, MacBooks and more but the accessories department has been lackluster, and products that were in the pipeline are nowhere to be seen. With Kuo previously revealing that we can expect the AirPods and AirPower mat to release by December 2018, there is still time for a surprise announcement by the end of this year.
