Apple to Offer OLED Displays on Its Entire iPhone Lineup by Next Year

By Nitish Singh / January 22, 2019

OLED displays are loved by consumers thanks to the deep blacks and rich colors that they offer. Apple implemented OLED technology for some of its iPhone panels in recent times, but not all phones received the special treatment. The company’s most successful iPhone from 2018, the XR comes with an LCD display, but it seems like the Cupertino tech giant is set to introduce OLED displays for all of its upcoming devices by 2020.

The rumor mill surrounding Apple’s using OLED for all future devices started churning after LCD panel supplier Japan Display started looking for new investors indicating that Apple is done with using LCD displays for iPhones. Japan Display might be in talks with Taiwan's TPK Holdings Co. and Silk Road Fun who will take over about 30% stakes of the LCD manufacturer.

Even though the iPhone XR was the most successful device from the 2018 lineup, it failed to meet expectations. Apple dialed down on the forecasted revenue as well which had to do with their battery replacement program shutting down as well as lackluster sales of its new phones. The iPad lineup may be getting a similar treatment in the future as well with OLED technology becoming popular.

It was rumored that the transition to OLED would be complete by 2019, but it is unknown if the change will affect this year’s lineup or not. Apple needs to get innovative with the new iPhones this year as users are getting less inclined to upgrade due to the high price tags they come with and a lack of innovation to make upgrades worthwhile. The US-China trade war is also adversely affecting the sales of the phones putting Apple in a tricky situation.
