Apple Introduces iPhone XR Sporting a 6.1-inch LCD Display And Multiple Color Options

By Vaidyanathan Subramaniam / September 13, 2018

As seen in our live blog of Apple's Sep 12 event, the company has taken the wraps off a new LCD variant of the iPhone. Dubbed the iPhone XR, the new variant was seen in renders and leaks over the past few weeks. The iPhone XR sports a 6.1-inch LCD display that Apple says is the best LCD ever used in a smartphone. The company calls it the 'Liquid Retina' display and it offers a resolution of 1792 x 828 resulting in a 326PPI pixel density.

Although the iPhone XR shares the design aesthetic of the iPhone XS, there are certain differences. The body of the XR is made of aluminum and not stainless steel. It is, however, available in 6 color finishes — black, white, blue, coral, yellow, and red. The phone is IP67 rated and there's no 3D Touch. Apple is offering a haptic touch instead.

Despite the supposedly lower price tag, the iPhone XR doesn't skimp on the internals. It sports the same A12 Bionic SoC as its OLED cousins along with the TrueDepth camera and Face ID authentication. For the price though, Apple is offering only a single-lens 12MP f/1.8 camera system at the rear. This is the same wide-angle lens present in the iPhone XS. It does apparently produce some great images and can do quite impressive depth effects on its own. Apple is also promising an hour and a half extra worth of battery life compared to the iPhone 8 Plus.

With the release of the iPhone XR, Apple is trying to increase penetrate the affordable smartphone market worldwide. The iPhone XR will be available in 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB variants starting from US$749. Pre-orders start from October 19 with availability from October 26 in more than 50 countries.
