The chilling case at the center of Netflix’s A Deadly American Marriage has reignited public interest in Molly Martens — the woman once convicted of killing her husband, Jason Corbett, alongside her father, Thomas Martens. Now released from prison, Molly’s whereabouts, and the ongoing emotional fallout, continue to stir debate on justice, trauma, and truth.

What Happened to Jason Corbett?

Molly Martens met Jason Corbett in Ireland while working as an au pair for his two young children after the death of his first wife. The two married in 2011 and moved to North Carolina. But their seemingly stable family life turned deadly on August 2, 2015, when Molly’s father called emergency services, claiming he had struck Jason with a baseball bat after Jason allegedly attacked Molly.

The scene was described by Davidson County District Attorney Garry Frank as “one of the bloodiest crime scenes I’ve seen.” Prosecutor Alan Martin added that Jason suffered “so many blows to his head the pathologist couldn’t count them,” calling the force “incredible.” (via Yahoo UK)

Molly claimed the act was self-defense and alleged that Jason had been abusive. In the documentary, she says Jason denied her the right to adopt his children because he wanted to weaponize taking the children from her. But Jack and Sarah, Jason’s children, have since denied those claims, asserting they were manipulated into making false statements. Jack told a district attorney, “[She] started saying if you don’t lie [she would] never see [us] again.” (via TODAY)

Conviction, Retrial, and Release

In 2017, Molly and her father were convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 20–25 years in prison. But their convictions were overturned in 2021 after an appeals court ruled that key testimony was wrongly excluded. Rather than face a retrial, they accepted plea deals in October 2023 — with Molly pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter.

She was released from prison on June 6, 2024, after nearly seven years behind bars. The Corbett family, still reeling from the legal twists, issued a statement expressing heartbreak, “After a nine-year battle for justice, we are deeply disappointed by the impending release of Tom and Molly Martens, the individuals responsible for the senseless and brutal murder of Jason, leaving his two children orphaned.” (via Yahoo UK)

Where is Molly Martens now?

According to her North Carolina inmate record, Molly was released from Raleigh and is now under supervised release in Tennessee. Her parole, which ends June 6, 2025, comes with strict conditions: she cannot contact Jack and Sarah and is not allowed to live with her father, though they are permitted to visit each other.

Brad Deen of the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction revealed (via The Times): “I can state that both will serve their 12 months of post-release supervision in Tennessee under an interstate compact, which is a fairly common circumstance. They will be subject to North Carolina conditions, but Tennessee Department of Corrections will supervise."

Molly said about Jack and Sarah, “I think that they hate the person that they think that I am... I certainly am not their mother now... [But] I was the mother of the Jack and Sarah that existed in another lifetime.” (via Yahoo UK)

Her brother, Connor Martens, told NBC affiliate WBIR Channel 10 in May 2025, “She’s in kind of the thick of her life… there’s been a lot more media scrutiny and harassment and she struggles a little bit more with the trauma, but overall, I think she’s really grateful and she’s doing really well, all things considered.” He also shared that she would be graduating that week after completing her degree.

The Documentary and the Questions it Raises

The Deadly American Marriage documentary, directed by Jessica Burgess and Jenny Popplewell, offers an in-depth and conflicting look at the case. “Where is the truth? Where are the lies? Where is justice?” the directors said in an interview with Tudum. “This documentary demonstrates that it’s not clear-cut.”

Filmed like a trial, the documentary shows both sides of the story — including the devastating impact on Jason’s children, who eventually returned to Ireland to live with their aunt and uncle. “To this day, Jack and Sarah tell us this is the best decision the court and their father could have made for them,” the directors shared.

An emotional scene shows the children in a car on the way to court, listening to Jason’s favorite song. “The family’s emotional reaction was so raw — and at the same time united — that we felt it encapsulated their experiences more than any interview could,” the filmmakers said.

Despite the years, the trauma endures. And while Molly and her father maintain their innocence, their release has stirred renewed pain and reflection. “They don’t believe they should have ever been convicted, let alone received a custodial sentence,” the directors added.

As Molly Martens lives out her final year on parole, the public — and Jason’s family — continue to grapple with the haunting question: was justice ever truly served?

A Deadly American Marriage documentary is now streaming on Netflix.
