Tata Electronics, an Indian electronics and semiconductor manufacturer and a key supplier to Apple and Tesla, has confirmed a data breach. The confirmation followed the appearance of files purportedly obtained from the company on the World Leaks hacker forum.
Tata Electronics has become a key player in India's push to expand electronics manufacturing and semiconductor production, partnering with global firms such as Apple, ASML, Intel, Qualcomm, and Tesla.
What Was Stolen in the Tata Electronics Breach
The hacker forum listing claims to offer more than 630GB of data allegedly stolen from Tata Electronics, comprising over 204,300 files. A review of a sample of the files identified what appear to be Apple supplier specifications and Tesla manufacturing documents.
Cybersecurity researcher Rajshekhar Rajaharia said the data advertised on the forum included Outlook email conversations, SAP-related information, and passport copies of employees, including foreign nationals, and documents purportedly linked to some of Tata Electronics' customers, according to TechCrunch and Reuters.
World Leaks purported Apple files and folders include some titled "com.apple.factorydata", and documents referring to "material specification," Reuters said, with some documents reportedly containing iPhone circuit board component quality inspection standards.
One folder labeled "NV36 Chargeport Controller - North America” purportedly referenced an upgraded version of Tesla's Model Y SUV, while another alleged Tesla 2023 document, described as "TRADE SECRET," contained project Highland images – the revamped Model 3 sedan.
Tata Electronics Response and Ransom Demand
A Tata Electronics spokesperson confirmed the data breach, stating the company had immediately activated its response protocols. "A few weeks ago, Tata Electronics identified a cybersecurity incident on some of our systems," Tata Electronics told Reuters in a statement. The spokesperson added that the incident had no impact on operations across businesses.
Reuters reported that Tata Electronics informed some employees at its iPhone assembly operations about the breach. The report also stated that Apple was investigating the incident and that a ransom demand had been made to Tata Electronics.
