Key Takeaways
  • System Offline: Brazil's national alert system was taken offline Saturday after a suspected hack.
  • Strange Message: The unauthorized alert sent to phones in several states contained the word "misanthropy."
  • Police Probe: The case will be handed to the Federal Police for investigation as the system is restored.

Brazil's government suspects a hacking attack triggered an unauthorized citizens’ alert sent to cell phones in parts of the country early on Saturday that contained the word "misanthropy," meaning hatred of humanity. The incident disrupted the national emergency notification system and is now the subject of a federal investigation.

What Happened to Brazil's Alert System

The National Protection and Civil Defense Secretariat said in a statement that the country's citizens' notification system, similar to the US’ Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA), also known as AMBER alerts, was taken offline at around 1:30 a.m. local time (0430 GMT).

The shutdown followed a message that reached users in several states, referring to an “extreme alert” regarding “civil defense: misanthropy.

According to the secretariat, the unauthorized alert was ordered remotely. That detail points to outside interference rather than an internal error, which is why authorities suspect a hacking attack rather than a routine system fault. Residents of São Paulo also reported receiving a similar message via SMS, as per CNN.

Officials did not name a suspect or describe how the Cellbroadcast platform may have been accessed, according to Reuters. The secretariat added that the notification system will be restored as soon as possible.

Federal Police to Investigate

The National Protection and Civil Defense Secretariat said the unauthorized alert will be handed to the Federal Police for investigation. The alert system is designed to warn citizens about emergencies, so any disruption raises concerns about public trust in official messaging.

For now, the focus remains on the Federal Police probe and on bringing the service back online. The government has not shared further details about the scope of the message or how many people received it.

In October 2025, hackers breached airport PA systems in Canada and the U.S. to broadcast political and anti-Israel messages.
