Key Takeaways
  • UK VPN restrictions: Government may announce measures to prevent children bypassing planned social media limits.
  • Age verification concerns: Critics warn enforcement could require broader age checks, raising privacy questions.
  • Further details pending: Ministers say decisions on VPNs and related restrictions will be revealed in July.

The UK government has indicated that it may introduce restrictions on Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) as part of its efforts to enforce a planned social media ban for children under 16.

Technology Minister Liz Kendall said the government will provide more details on VPNs and additional measures in July. Her comments come as questions grow over how authorities plan to stop young users from bypassing age-based restrictions online.

Concerns Over Circumvention and Age Verification

Critics argue that enforcing the proposed social media ban could require stricter age-verification systems, raising privacy concerns for all internet users. Many have also pointed out that children could potentially use VPNs to access platforms from countries where such restrictions do not apply.

The issue gained attention after reports showed a sharp rise in online searches for VPN services following Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s announcement of plans to restrict social media access for under-16s.

Government Considering Additional Measures

Children’s Minister Josh MacAlister suggested that age checks for VPN users could also be considered. Meanwhile, Liz Kendall declined to provide specific details on how the government would address VPN use, saying further announcements would be made next month.

The Labour government has previously expressed concerns about VPNs being used to bypass online safety measures. In recent years, senior Labour figures have proposed tighter oversight of VPN-related activity linked to age-verification requirements.

If the UK decides to ban or significantly restrict VPN services, it would join a small group of countries that already impose limits on such technology.
