Opera has rolled out a major update to VPN Pro, its premium virtual private network service, aiming to offer faster speeds, stronger security, and broader global coverage. Announced on July 1, 2025, the new VPN Pro is available on Opera One, Opera GX, and Opera for Android, offering device-wide protection across up to six Windows, macOS, or Android devices.

Unlike Opera’s free in-browser VPN, VPN Pro is a paid service that works outside the browser and now includes:

A key upgrade in this release is the introduction of the Lightway protocol. Built using the Rust programming language, Lightway is designed to provide secure and efficient VPN connections while consuming less battery. Opera says the protocol includes post-quantum protection by default, which aims to keep users safe from both current and emerging cyber threats.

Opera also emphasizes that VPN Pro is governed by a strict no-log policy. The company claims it doesn’t track, store, or sell user browsing data or personal information, reinforcing its stance on user privacy.

Existing VPN Pro desktop users will be upgraded automatically when they restart their browser. Mobile users will get a notification prompting them to update. New users can try out the enhanced VPN Pro experience with a 7-day free trial.

Opera says more features are in the pipeline and plans to roll them out in future updates. The company, founded in 1995 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, continues to position itself as a privacy-focused browser alternative with innovative built-in tools.
