What is the plot of My Oxford Year?

When Anna, an ambitious young American, arrives at the University of Oxford to pursue a long-held dream, her life seems perfectly planned—until she meets Jamie, a charming British professor who throws her off course in the most unexpected way. As their connection deepens, both are forced to reckon with life-altering choices that challenge their carefully laid paths.

For Carson, stepping into Anna’s shoes meant stepping into Oxford’s magic with fresh eyes. “I chose not to visit all the locations where we would be filming because I wanted to save my honest reaction to witnessing the magic of Oxford for the first time, for once the cameras were rolling,” she explained to Tudum, “to truly experience Oxford just as Anna would.”

Her co-star, Nicholas Galitzine, shared that the story hit close to home. “I have a friend that studied for uni in Oxford, and so there was a period of my life where I was going up and getting the train to Oxford quite frequently,” he said, reflecting on the personal familiarity of the setting.

The timeless backdrop of Oxford elevates Anna and Jamie’s emotional journey, as their story unfolds from an unexpected meeting to a sweeping romance. “I felt like I was reading a classic,” Carson told ELLE, recalling her first read of the script. “Like I was reading a timeless love story that also felt so fresh, and so modern, and so real, and so true for this generation of viewers.”

Who’s in the cast of My Oxford Year?

Carson and Mylchreest headline My Oxford Year, and their undeniable chemistry is the heartbeat of the film. “They bounced off each other from the first moment they worked together,” says director Iain Morris to Tudum. “And clearly enjoyed trying to make each other laugh — and maybe cry?”

According to Morris, the duo succeeded at both. “I hope watching the film allows the audience to run through all the emotions associated with the wonderful, noisy, chaotic, unexpected, funny, heartbreaking experience that is falling in love,” he adds.

From the moment casting began, Carson had no doubts about who should play Jamie. “I watched Queen Charlotte in awe of Corey. He’s an extraordinary force of an actor,” she shared. “When it came time to cast Jamie, I always knew it would be Corey. As soon as he walked into the room for our chemistry read in London, Anna and Jamie came to life. Instantly. Corey was a true partner in this experience . . . And together we were dedicated to diving into Anna and Jamie’s love story, to bring it to life with every bit of our hearts.”

For Mylchreest, it was the team around him that made the experience unforgettable. “Getting to meet, work, spend time, talk, joke with the cast and crew … they are absolutely crucial to why I think the film is good,” said the actor.

You can expect some laughs, a lot of love, maybe some sadness, a couple of surprises along the way, but [you can expect] to meet two really lovely, very human characters and all of their amazing friends and family. Get ready for a lovely journey,” he added.

Is There a Trailer for My Oxford Year?

Not yet—there’s no trailer for My Oxford Year at the moment, but we’ll drop it here as soon as it’s released. Stay tuned!

Is My Oxford Year Based on a book?

Yes, My Oxford Year is based on Julia Whelan’s novel of the same name, which itself was adapted from Allison Burnett’s original screenplay. The film is deeply rooted in literature and poetry, capturing the spirit of Oxford’s literary legacy.

It was an honor and joy to dive into Anna’s world of dreams, of love, of poetry. To study the great poets that walked the halls of Oxford, and who have since filled our lives with the magic of literature. In 1833, Alfred Tennyson wrote ‘It is better to have loved and lost, than never to have loved at all.’ Two hundred years after Tennyson so beautifully uttered those words, they ring truer than ever — in the halls of Oxford, and within the heart of our film,” says Carson (via Tudum).

She continues, “Our story is a film that in every frame reaffirms the belief that life is too short to not live it in love. To not live it in joy. And I hope that truth rings true in the hearts of anyone who watches our film.”

Filming Details

Principal photography began in September 2024, with filming taking place across scenic locations in England, including Oxford and Windsor (via Slough Observer UK & thisisoxfordshire UK).

Behind the Scenes

My Oxford Year is an upcoming American romantic comedy directed by BAFTA nominee Iain Morris. The film is based on Julia Whelan’s novel, which itself was adapted from an original screenplay by Allison Burnett. The screenplay for the film was co-written by Burnett and Melissa Osborne.

Produced by Marty Bowen, Wyck Godfrey, Laura Quicksilver, and Isaac Klausner for Temple Hill Entertainment, the film also lists George Berman as co-producer. Executive producers include Caroline Levy, Christopher Simon, Maggie Monteith, Pete Harris, and Laura Char Carson, with Sofia Carson also earning her second executive producer credit following 2022’s Purple Hearts.

Comedy is [Morris'] language, so his vision of this film beautifully created a timeless, heartbreaking, sweeping romance, grounded in laughter,” says Carson (via Tudum). “Within one scene you may fall madly in love, you may cry, but he will always make sure the joy of laughter is present.”

On working with Temple Hill, Carson added, “Marty Bowen and Temple Hill have gifted us with some of this generation's most beloved romances, from The Fault in Our Stars to Twilight. It was a beautiful experience to partner with them in producing My Oxford Year.”
