Celine Song crafted a beautiful story in her romance drama, Past Lives, and it garnered two Oscar nominations (for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay). Also, it earned rave reviews. She is following up her writer/director debut with Materialists, a film that’s all set to explore the dilemma of dating.
What do people focus on when they go to a matchmaker? Who is their ideal partner? For most, it has to do with looks and wealth. So, love tends to take a backseat. But who is the ideal match for a matchmaker who knows exactly how the dating market works?
With a star studded cast full of names like Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans, Materialists is all set to explore love in the context of material and social reality. Keep scrolling because we will reveal everything we know about this film. Also, keep checking back because we will add new details when they get released.
Materialists will premiere in theaters on June 13, 2025. The film has a R-rating for strong language and brief mature content.
The synopsis for Materialists as per A24 is: “A young, ambitious New York City matchmaker finds herself torn between the perfect match and her imperfect ex.”
Dakota Johnson plays the high-end matchmaker while Chris Evans plays her loving but imperfect ex who is broke. Pedro Pascal is the new suitor who is wealthy and the perfect match. So, who will she choose? That’s the question, as the film will explore the push-and-pull between romantic idealism and the social reality of being with a wealthy partner.
Celine Song revealed more about the two men in an interview with Associated Press. She said, “Pedro plays somebody who is probably, in straight dating, someone of the highest possible value. Chris’ character, in the spectrum in the marketplace of values of dating, is someone who is of the lowest value possible.”
She also said that the film will explore universal themes. Song said, “It’s this thing of how we talk about what we want in our partner, when we’re asked to use language to describe it, and how we literally, spiritually fall in love. The gap between those two things is terrifyingly big. To me, that’s where the mystery of the film is.”
As per Gold Derby, Song has stated that she was inspired by classics such as Pride and Prejudice and Howards End. Dakota Johnson revealed to Associated Press that her character, Lucy, goes on a journey to figure out what she wants in life. She said:
"She’s sort of at the top of her game in her work and is very disconnected from her heart and focused on being a perfectionist and getting people to get married. She’s also on her own journey of trying to figure out what it is she wants for herself in this life, and, essentially, do you fight for the thing that you think you want, or do you fight for that thing that you know you need?"
The trailer for Materialists begins with Dakota Johnson’s Lucy M. introducing herself as a matchmaker and asking a man walking on the streets if he wants to meet somebody. The trailer then reveals that Lucy has successfully gotten 9 people married. So, she’s pretty good at her job.
The voiceover even says that no matter what the clients want, it’s the job of the matchmaker to deliver. We then meet Pedro Pascal’s Harry, who is rich, suave, and perfect. Lucy describes him as a “unicorn” in the dating market. He is interested in dating her, and she is puzzled as to why he is choosing her. “Why me?” she asks him.
To this Harry responds that his intuition is never wrong. However, there is a third person in this equation- Chris Evans’ John. John is good looking but he’s not suave, and he’s certainly not rich. He works as a waiter and lives with roommates. Also, he is aware of where he falls short in the dating and marriage market.
However, he is in love with Lucy and declares that he can imagine a future with her, filled with children who look like her. The ball is in Lucy’s court, and she has a choice to make. Check out the trailer below:
