When Jason Corbett was brutally murdered in his North Carolina home in 2015, his children — Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch — were asleep nearby. The horror that unfolded not only robbed them of their father but catapulted them into an international custody battle, intense legal drama, and years of emotional healing.

Netflix’s new documentary A Deadly American Marriage, released on May 9, puts the spotlight back on the case — and on Jason Corbett’s kids, whose lives were forever altered.

Jason Corbett’s Children lost both Parents by the age of 10

By the time they were just 10 and 8, Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch had lost both of their parents. Their biological mother, Margaret Fitzpatrick, died in 2006 from an asthma attack when Jack was 2 and Sarah was only a newborn.

In 2015, their father, Jason Corbett, was beaten to death with a baseball bat and paving stone while the children slept nearby in the house he shared with his second wife, Molly Martens, and her father, retired FBI agent Tom Martens.

Martens and her father were later convicted of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in 2016, the Irish Independent reported. They claimed self-defense, alleging that Jason had been abusive — claims Jack and Sarah denied, as documented in CBS’s 48 Hours.

Initially sentenced to 20–25 years, their convictions were overturned in 2020 due to evidentiary issues. In 2023, they accepted plea deals for voluntary manslaughter and were released in June 2024 under supervision, according to the Associated Press.

Molly Martens' kids: A Custody Battle that Echoed Around the World

Following Jason Corbett’s death, the question arose: What would happen to Molly Martens’ kids — Jack and Sarah, whom she had helped raise since their toddler years? Though she sought custody, Jason had already made his wishes clear. In 2007, he named his sister Tracey and her husband David Lynch as guardians in his will — a decision that would become crucial.

Despite Molly's legal battle for custody, the court sided with the Lynches after a three-week hearing. Jack and Sarah returned to Ireland, where they began therapy and slowly adjusted to life with their aunt, uncle, and cousins.

Molly continued to post public pleas to the children, including a December 2015 message quoted by The Irish Times, “I will never stop loving you… You are my heart and soul.” But the children had made their decision — one that would become even more definitive years later.

Jason Corbett’s kids took the Stand in Court

In the original 2017 trial, 13-year-old Jack gave a powerful victim impact statement: “My father’s death has been life-changing for me. My dad was always there for me... He won’t see me grow from a child to a teenager,” he said (via Irish Times)

Initially, both children had told a social worker that Jason was abusive — claims that were later recanted. They revealed that Molly had coached them to make false statements. These early claims were ruled as unreliable hearsay and excluded from the trial.

By 2023, during the re-sentencing phase, both Jack and Sarah used their voices to speak out against Molly and Tom Martens. Jack, then 19, stated, “Hearing my words being used to try to mitigate the crime committed. My words were weaponised to help Molly and Tom Martens get away with killing my dad.” (via Irish Times)

Sarah, then 17, added, “Molly and Tom Martens have used me... I can stand here today and say I do not love Molly and she is not my mother.”

Where are Jason Corbett’s Children now?

Since returning to Limerick, Ireland, in 2015, Jason Corbett’s children have rebuilt their lives under the care of their aunt and uncle

Sarah Corbett Lynch has emerged as a public voice for children navigating grief. She published Noodle Loses Dad in 2020 and followed it up with A Time for Truth in 2025 — a memoir about her family, loss, and reclaiming her story.

Speaking to Evoke, Sarah said, “This is my story... I don’t have to listen to her lies any more.”

Jack Corbett Lynch, on the other hand, has chosen a more private path, studying music and rarely giving interviews. As Sarah put it, “Jack and I are very different. He wants the truth out there, but he just doesn’t want to do interviews… It’s only in the last few years that we’ve really spoken about what happened to us. We had very different experiences.”

Both siblings appear in Netflix’s A Deadly American Marriage, which revisits the 2015 events and their aftermath through exclusive interviews with Jack, Sarah, Molly Martens, and Tom Martens. In a family statement released alongside the documentary, they said, “Though he may have been silenced, it is our responsibility to continue speaking on his behalf.” (via People)

What does an au pair mean?

An au pair is typically a young foreign person who lives with a family to help care for their children or assist with housework in exchange for room, board, and a modest allowance. Originally, Molly Martens came to the Corbett family in Ireland in 2008 as an au pair before becoming a romantic partner to Jason.

From Heartbreak to Healing

The story of Jason Corbett’s kids is one of trauma, resilience, and strength. While the documentary may expose dark truths and bitter betrayals, it also serves as a testament to how Jack and Sarah Corbett Lynch — once caught in a media storm — emerged as survivors with voices of their own.

Their fairy tale ended in tragedy, but their future is now one they write for themselves — far from the shadows cast by Molly Martens and the courtroom drama that once defined their lives.

A Deadly American Marriage documentary is now streaming on Netflix.
