Star Wars Celebration 2025 is off to a bumper start as it has been revealed that Deadpool & Wolverine’s Shawn Levy will be helming Star Wars: Starfighter, a brand new live-action offering. While plot details are sparse, Ryan Gosling’s inclusion has made many sit straight and take notice of this.

Star Wars: Starfighter will be released on Friday, May 28, 2027.
What is Star Wars: Starfighter About?
Star Wars: Starfighter is said to be a standalone story set about five years after The Rise of Skywalker. Also, it’s not going to be a prequel or a sequel and will be unconnected to the Skywalker Saga. Shawn Levy said (via THR), “This is a stand-alone... It's a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet.”
Ryan Gosling revealed during Star Wars Celebrations 2025- “The reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters. It’s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.”
What is Star Wars: Starfighter Game About?
Star Wars: Starfighter shares its name with a 2001 Star Wars game of the same name. However, it’s unclear whether any plot element from it will inspire the film or if it will be a straight adaptation of it. There is also a sequel game called Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter, released in 2002.
The first game is set during Episode 1 and puts the spotlight on some of the heroic pilots before and during the Battle of Naboo. The sequel game happens during Episode II and focuses on Jedi Master Adi Gallia and Nym. The latter is a pirate character introduced in the first game.
The first game focuses on 3 characters:
- Rhys Dallows- A member of the Naboo Royal Space Fighter Corps
- Vana Saga- A mercenary working for the Trade Federation
- Nym- a Feeorin pirate.
Who is in Star Wars: Starfighter?
The only cast confirmed for now is Ryan Gosling. His character name hasn’t been revealed yet. As per THR, “There does seem to be a search for a teenage actor to play opposite Gosling’s mystery man and for a male and female villain.”

Filming and Production Details
Star Wars: Starfighter is currently in pre-production. Production is slated to begin this fall.
