OnePlus ‘Nord’ Launch Is Approaching and It’s Signaling a Market Shift

• OnePlus Nord’s launch is imminent, and it’s going to bring back the good old “flagship killer” vibe.
• The market is shifting towards smaller and cheaper devices that still pack a punch and sport good imaging units.
• Google and Apple are also preparing to push their midranges in the growing market segment.

OnePlus is ready to return to the awesomeness of “flagship killing” with the release of the ‘Nord’ approaching. This is a highly anticipated device that is to become a market hit, following the recipe of success that turned OnePlus into a globally respected smartphone manufacturer. Offering budget devices that have comparable performance to flagships has always been a sure way to win the consumer’s attention. If quality and reliability are thrown in the mix, you win their heart (and money) too. This is what made the OnePlus One a success, and the Pocophone F1 a market sensation back in 2018.

However, the latest OnePlus devices (the 8 and 8 Pro) were priced closely to a full grand, so it looked like the Chinese manufacturer had lost its direction and niche. Then COVID-19 came, bringing unprecedented market disruption, and unfortunately, created the conditions for a global economic recession. Apple had the SE 2020 ready and immediately threw it into the market at the best timing possible. This forced the Android world to reconsider what people want from their smartphones, and where we’re likely to go from here.

The answer was “smaller, cheaper, powerful,” so OnePlus got back to working on a more inexpensive model that would still sport quality hardware and amazing performance. At this point, the ‘Nord’ is ready to launch in India, which is a “barometer” market for new smartphones. Europe will also get the device, but apparently, the US isn’t included yet. OnePlus may want to see how well the sales of the ‘Nord’ will go before sending it to the Lions’ pit that is the American market. Rumors place the Nord’s price around $400 or even lower.

At the same time, another highly-anticipated small-in-size yet powerful mid-ranger is preparing to launch as it got certified by the FCC. The viral outbreak turbulence shook the Google Pixel 4a, and its release was previously delayed. Still, it looks like it will finally launch as the competition is already eating its potential sales. This device is rumored to cost between $300 and $350.

And as for the Apple camp, leakers claim to know the upcoming iPhone 12 range’s price, putting the smaller (5.4-inch screen) 4G device at $549, which is the model that’s expected to sell the most. The bigger ones (Pro and Max) will start from $649 and $749, respectively. That’s a very significant price drop over the previous generation models and a clear indication of where the market is heading.
